Lois Volta, Germantown Meeting, wants you to clean your house. Not just for the aesthetic reasons, but for the spiritual and feminist reasons. As she writes, “There will always be something waiting for you to clean up. It’s better to make peace with this concept than to fight it. Let contentment and peace be just as never-ending as the laundry.” [Read more…] about Fostering Equality in Everyday Home Life

Quaker Spotlight: A Woman of Note
As we began our interview with Demie Kurz, a long-time member of the Religious Society of Friends and retired professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, who also co-directed the Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies program, we were immediately impressed with her flow of conversation and emphasis on the history of Quaker women. Nowadays, Demie Kurz spends her time in retirement writing a book on parenting, written from a sociological perspective. This is her story. [Read more…] about Quaker Spotlight: A Woman of Note

Resources To Support Our Witness to Walking Gently on the Earth!
“We recognize that the well-being of the earth is a fundamental spiritual concern. From the beginning, it was through the wonders of nature that people saw God. How we treat the earth, and its creatures is a basic part of our relationship with God. Our planet as a whole, not just the small parts of it in our immediate custody, requires our responsible attention.” — Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice, 1997.

The Minor Prophets, also known as the Book of the Twelve, include a dozen voices across four centuries, reminding God’s people to fully embody their covenant with God. As empires rose and fell, as the descendants of Israel experienced traumatic loss and distraction from God, prophets continued to hear God calling them back to just treatment of others and the land. These “minor” prophets are only minor in terms of length. Each prophet offers courageous critique and powerful hope. In our own time, these prophets offer an example of seeing and speaking clearly about painful realities and the terrifying results of our actions. They also show us a way forward in casting a Spirit-led, hope-filled vision for the community to move toward. This combination of critique and hope can help Friends and others listen and live courageously into much-needed prophetic action in our own time.
