Mystic Friends is a spiritual group formed under the care of Newtown Square Friends Meeting to create a safe community to share and explore mystical experiences in a wide variety of settings. Quakerism, at its heart, is a mystical religion, but many are reluctant to share their mystical experiences out of concern that they may not be welcomed in a warm and supportive manner. Our goal is to encourage the sharing and discussion of mystical experiences in the setting of an old Friends Meeting House.

Kairos on the Mountain
May 15-22, 2024
Individual rooms: $1,400
Shared room: $1,100This cost includes all lodging, meals, and activities. Each participant is responsible for booking their travel to and from San Jose, Costa Rica, to arrive by 3pm at Juan Santamaria International Airport.
This year, Francisco Burgos will lead a pilgrimage to Monteverde, Costa Rica. As we explore nature, accompany one another, and create space for practices that nurture our spiritual journey, participants will be invited to embrace daily life with simplicity, gratitude, hope, and a deep sense of connection.
Kairos on the Mountain is an invitation to pause, reflect on your personal and communal spiritual path, and encounter the divine in nature while walking with others and experiencing the living dynamic between community and solitude.
Participants will learn about the history of the Quaker community in Monteverde as they explore the beauty of the cloud forest. The pilgrimage will create a unique space for spiritual growth by combining key practices from Quaker and other faith traditions, and provide the opportunity to engage in contemplative praying of the Scriptures and experience the deep practice of worship sharing. This kairos pilgrimage is rooted in meeting for worship, worship sharing, lectio divina (divine reading), silence, community, and celebration.
This spiritual experiment will include two 90-minute online sessions prior to the trip to Monteverde to support our preparation for this journey.
How Do We Pray with Children?
How do you pray? What personal practices do you have that bring you into relationship and conversation with the Spirit? How do prayer practices nurture your spiritual life and anchor your experience of gathering with others for meeting for worship? In my experience, we don’t talk a lot about prayer in Quaker religious education — how to pray with children, teach prayers to children, or why we might offer this as a practice for their “spiritual toolbox.” I’ve been collecting ideas and resources over time, hoping to bring together interested Friends to talk about prayer with children. On December 2, several Friends gathered for an online Religious Education Conversation on “Prayer with Children,” and what is shared below is from a presentation, participant sharing, and group reflections.
