Annual Pow-wow Time

Join Salem Quarter Friends in celebrating the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation’s 42nd Annual Public Pow-wow, June 10th & 11th, 2023

Directions: The Pow-wow is located on Route 40, just west of Sharptown in Pilesgrove Township, at the Salem County Fairgrounds, about three miles west of Woodstown in Salem County, NJ, and about eight miles east of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

  • From the Delaware Memorial Bridge: look for Route 40 East to Atlantic City. Take Route 40 about 8 miles East, and the Pow-wow will be on your left.
  • From Route 55: look for Route 40 West just North of Vineland. Take Route 40 West about eighteen miles from Route 55, and the Pow-wow will be on your right. You will pass through Woodstown and Sharptown. The Cowtown rodeo grounds will be on your left before you reach the Pow-wow location on your right.

 

 

Salem Oak’s Next Generation of Stewards

When a centuries old oak tree located at the Salem (Quaker) meetinghouse fell in 2019, the local Quaker community along with other South Jersey natives mourned its loss. The significance of the mighty oak dates back to the late 1600s when John Fenwick, credited as founder of Salem, New Jersey, settled in Salem in 1675. According to legend, the Lenni Lenape people living on the land signed a peace treaty with Fenwick while seeking shade and comfort under the tree. The Salem Quaker meetinghouse held a traditional Quaker memorial service to commemorate the life and legacy of the historic “Treaty Tree”.
