Pennsylvania Council of Churches Launches Community Garden Initiative to Feed, Educate, and Transform Lives in Dauphin County
Harrisburg, PA — October 27, 2025— The Pennsylvania Council of Churches is pleased to announce the launch of its new Community Garden Project. This countywide initiative invites individuals, families, schools, congregations, and community organizations to grow their own food while cultivating community, health, and hope.
Inspired by Jesus Christ’s directive to feed the hungry and extend compassion to those in need, this initiative embodies the Council’s holistic approach to ministry. It emphasizes a commitment to serving the community by addressing a wide array of needs, encompassing not just spiritual nourishment but also the physical, mental, and economic well-being of individuals and families throughout Dauphin County. Recognizing that faithful ministry must encompass all aspects of life, this initiative aims to create a healthier, more integrated approach to support and service for everyone involved.
The PACC Community Garden Project provides free garden plots on the Council’s property for community members and congregations. Participants are asked only to contribute their time and hands to help with the construction and maintenance of the site. In return, they gain access to fresh, organic produce, educational opportunities in sustainable gardening, and a shared space for fellowship and growth.
“Our goal is to empower communities to take part in growing healthy food and to build
stronger relationships with one another,” said Rev. Dr. Larry Pickens, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council of Churches. “By growing food together, we nurture both body and spirit—helping individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive.”
Beyond gardening, the initiative also seeks to create pathways for entrepreneurial development—equipping participants with skills to prepare and market food, start small food-based enterprises, and engage in health-focused community projects.
The Pennsylvania Council of Churches is collaborating with faith communities, schools, businesses, hospitals, and government entities to foster partnerships that advance community health, sustainability, and food security.
