Keith Neil Grombacher-Irwin passed away unexpectedly at his home in Antonito, Colorado, on June 15, 2026. He was 35 years old. Keith was born on November 2, 1990, in Voorhees, New Jersey, a small suburban community about 20 miles from Philadelphia. He is survived by his son, Jackson (Jack) Irwin; his partner, Katie McClurg; his mother, Audrey Gyswyt; his sister, Kathleen Jurek; his grandmother, Elizabeth Gyswyt; his uncles, Paul Gyswyt and John Grombacher-Irwin; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Grombacher-Irwin, and his uncle, Terry Grombacher-Irwin.
Keith attended George School in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he developed lifelong friendships. At George School, Keith excelled at mathematics and history, ran cross-country, and generously fixed his peers’ electronics for no charge. He was known for a string of good-hearted incidents in high school, including but not limited to: being put on ‘hammock probation’, moon-walking across the finish line of a 5K race, assisting in the retrieval of his rival high school’s mascot, and reading ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’ dressed in a Dr. Seuss hat at his commencement. Keith was an active volunteer, an accomplished Eagle Scout, and never shied away from helping others.
After graduating from George School, he pursued an education abroad at the University of Rostock in Germany. During that time, he traveled throughout Europe, developing a lifelong love of exploration and discovery. After returning to the United States, Keith lived in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New Orleans before eventually making his home in Colorado.
Keith had a curious mind and a natural talent for computers. Throughout his life, he continued to develop his programming skills and became especially knowledgeable in the GNU/Linux operating system. He was passionate about all things open source, such as software, Wikipedia, fixer culture, and live concert recordings. On a whim, he joined a state-sponsored truck-driving program and came to enjoy the freedom of the open road. He eventually traveled through all 48 continental states.
In 2014, Keith set out on a remarkable journey through the Americas, hitchhiking from Philadelphia to Argentina and back again in under a year. Along the way, he recorded some of his adventures as he traveled through Central America, the Andes Mountains, farmland, and cities, witnessing both hardship and beauty. Keith made this trip on his own, reflecting deeply on the people and places he encountered. These travels, along with many of his other travelogues and DIY projects, were later published on his website. He wrote dozens of letters to friends and family along the way, and spent virtually no money on transportation, relying solely on the kindness of strangers to determine his path.
Inspired by the rural places he encountered while trucking, Keith decided to build a life in Colorado. In 2018, he purchased property in the San Luis Valley, eventually moving to the area in 2020. He first lived in his RV before buying a house in Antonito. That house became his home as his family grew to include his beloved son, Jack, and his partner, Katie.
Keith will be remembered for his independent spirit, his adventurous heart, his unique way of seeing the world, and the special friendships he built along the way. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
