Emily Provance on Communities and Political Violence

May 31 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

On Sunday, May 31 at 2 pm, Emily Provance (“Quaker Emily”) will visit Barnegat Friends Meeting in person and give a presentation on communities and violence, particularly political violence, in an increasingly fractured society.

You are invited to join Emily Provance at Barnegat Friends Meeting, 614 East Bay Avenue, Barnegat, NJ, USA. If you cannot come to Barnegat, please participate via Zoom. Either way, we ask you to register here: https://barnegatquakers.tiny.us/QuakerEmily.

Currently Emily Provance is in Northern Ireland, where she is looking at the history of the Troubles and how that is parallel (and not) to current conditions in the United States. Emily brought to Barnegat Meeting’s attention a recent FIRE survey that found 34% of college students now say it is sometimes acceptable to respond to objectionable speech with violence. That’s a scary trend regardless of where we stand politically. Her Barnegat presentation will pull from Quaker experience and Quaker theology to talk about how we respond to an increasingly fractured society.

You may be familiar with Emily Provance’s extensive work as a traveling Quaker minister. She has led numerous workshops and has given presentations for organizations worldwide. Her recent publications include the Pendle Hill pamphlet, “Spiritual Gifts, the Beloved Community, and Covenant” and the book, “Before the Resurrection, Transitions and Endings in Quaker Meetings and Churches”. In 2025 she was Britain Yearly Meeting’s invited speaker at the Swarthmore Lecture organized by Woodbrooke. Her topic was “A Testimony of Community”. You can learn more at Emily’s blog, “Turning, Turning, Holy Experiments Among Friends”.
