Is there anyone who has not been touched by addiction struggles of their own or those of a loved one?
FACT: The United States has the highest rate of drug overdose deaths among 30 countries. Provisional data shows about 87,000 drug overdose deaths from October 2023 to September 2024. [CDC report] That is down from around 114,000 the previous year. This is not something to celebrate. Every life matters and even 1 death is 1 too many.
“I believe all people matter and should be treated with dignity and respect. I am driven to do my part in ending the overdose crisis.”
About Elizabeth Burke Beaty and Sea Change
Elizabeth Burke Beaty, a graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro N.C. (1990) was taught as a child to be of service to others. She is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS), living and working in New Jersey and brings over 30 years of personal recovery & experience to her mission. She is the founding Executive Director & President of Sea Change Recovery Community and Harm Reduction Center and Co-director of the Not One More NJ Campaign to end overdose.
Recognizing the lack of public health resources and compassionate support for people engaged in substance use and/or in recovery, Elizabeth founded Sea Change in November 2020. The organization has since become a leader in community-based harm reduction initiatives, offering peer-delivered interventions, collective education, and stigma reduction efforts. In 2023, Sea Change became the first Harm Reduction Center in Ocean County approved by the New Jersey State Department of Health. All services provided are free and confidential, ensuring that those affected by substance use and their families have access to the support they need to lead healthier lives.
In 2022, Elizabeth launched the National Sea Change Coalition (NSCC), a collective effort uniting individuals with lived experience and state-wide organizers. Through community organizing, the coalition builds people power to direct opioid settlement funding, promote health equity, and destigmatize harm reduction strategies to address the overdose crisis. By harnessing the power of lived experience and strategic action, NSCC is working to save lives, end the opioid epidemic, and challenge the “war on drugs” that has historically criminalized and isolated people struggling with Substance Use Disorder.
