SUMMARY:Reclaiming Rest: Nourishing Practices to Renew and Restore Body\, Mind\, and Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Spring Term @ Pendle Hill\n\nReclaiming Rest: Nourishing Practices to Renew and Restore Body\, Mind\, and Spirit\nMarch 1 @ 12:00 pm – March 8 @ 1:00 pm EST \nWallingford\, PA\, just outside Philadelphia\, PA \nOn Campus \n“Over the margins of life comes a whisper\, a faint call\, a premonition of richer living which we know we are passing by. Strained by the very mad pace of our daily outer burdens\, we are further strained by an inward uneasiness\, because we have hints that there is a way of life vastly richer and deeper than all this hurried existence\, a life of unhurried serenity and peace and power.” \n— Thomas R. Kelly\, 1941 Quaker educator and mystic \nMany of us believe that we have to earn rest and renewal and that overwork is the norm. Frazzled and stressed by the pull of too many demands of work\, family\, children\, aging relatives\, and our own needs\, we succumb to individual pressures that foster a collective culture of burnout and toxic productivity. Offering approaches from the Plum Village tradition and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh\, Quaker activist and educator\, Parker Palmer\, and the Center for Courage & Renewal\, Valerie will invite participants to explore the connection between radiant rest\, peacemaking\, social justice\, and societal transformation to live in greater groundedness and alignment with your deepest values. \nWhat You Will Learn: \n\nCo-Connection between rest\, renewal\, and productivity\nUnderstand  the science of stress and burnout\n Learn when productivity turns to toxic burnout\nExplore rest and peacemaking\nUnderstand connection between rest and social justice\, social action\nEngage mindful rest\, constructive rest\, and yoga nidra\n\nTentative Class Format \n\nCentering Moment\nContent Delivery\nIndividual\, small\, and large group reflection and discussion\nMindful rest\, constructive rest and/or yoga nidra

SUMMARY:Music of Freedom and Sanctuary - A New Year's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A Pendle Hill New Year’s Retreat with Karl Middleman to probe the complex crosscurrents of life and art\, exploring the role of music as a safe harbor for reflection. \nDuring this time of political and economic upheaval we seek safe places in our daily lives\, places where we can find respite and sanctuary amidst the pain in our world. This workshop speaks to that need. Individual freedoms and the idea of sanctuary figure prominently in music and the arts — freedom from prejudice\, freedom from physical harm\, freedom to be a contrarian\, freedom to think nothing at all.    \nIn Music of Freedom and Sanctuary\, we will probe the complex crosscurrents of life and art\, exploring the role of music as a safe harbor for reflection. Topics will include:    \n\nThe lives and challenges facing “exiles in paradise\,” émigré artists and musicians to the U.S. following WWII;\nThe imagined sanctuary of Cold War politics\, and the way American isolationism played out on Broadway stages;\nToday’s songs of freedom from many lands;\nReligious sanctuary as represented in the music of Bach and Puccini;\nLonged-for deliverance in African-American spirituals;\nThe sanctuary Beethoven found in nature;\nToday’s diverse artists making a difference; and\nOur own artistic and musical resources.\n\n This workshop at peaceable Pendle Hill offers respite and inspiration\, a delightful way to round out the year. \n\nThis retreat culminates in an alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration\, with hors d’oeuvres and a home-cooked dinner\, lively concert in the Barn\, desserts\, and midnight candlelit Meeting for Worship. This event is already included with your registration to this retreat!

SUMMARY:A Radical Side of the Early Quakers
DESCRIPTION:A First Monday Lecture on the zealous and radical early Quakers of the mid-seventeenth century England.  \nHow far did early Quakers go to save souls and live out their spiritual convictions?  \nDr. Erica Canela’s First Monday Lecture explores the origins of Quakerism in the chaos of the mid-seventeenth century in England. Following the devastating civil wars\, the population was left exhausted\, traumatised\, and living in a shattered landscape. In this context of ruin and uncertainty\, a new religious movement emerged in the north of England. The early Quakers\, driven by intense spiritual conviction\, believed it was their duty to save souls at any cost. Their methods were seen by many as extreme and they repeatedly defied the authorities.   \nTheir radical actions were expressions of deep religious zeal\, shaped by fear\, desperation\, and a longing for moral certainty in a world that felt irredeemably broken. Dr. Canela’s talk challenges the idealised image of early Quakerism\, revealing a group of believers whose fervour sometimes led to deeply troubling behaviour. They stood firm in their beliefs\, often risking persecution and death. In doing so\, they demonstrated how far people will go\, especially in times of crisis\, to seek safety\, truth\, and divine purpose. Even when it meant crossing the line between faith and fanaticism.

SUMMARY:Friends’ Decision-Making and Clerking: Participating in Meetings for Business with Joy and Confidence
DESCRIPTION:A weekend workshop with Steve Mohlke and \,O on liberatory clerking skills and principles. \nThis is an opportunity for both new and experienced clerks of Friends’ meetings and committees to meet and think together about the role of presiding clerk in the spiritual practice of meeting for business.   \nThe workshop will address racism in the context of Friends’ decision-making and clerking. We need to pay attention to racism because it affects (infects) nearly everything in this society\, and we will be lifting up decision-making processes that seek to liberate the Spirit among all participants.   \nThere will be handouts to follow along during the program\, exercises\, and opportunities to share experiences\, with most work being done in a whole group setting. It is expected that each person will leave the weekend with new energy and enthusiasm for being a clerk\, feeling well grounded in both the theoretical and the practical.

SUMMARY:Building Common Ground in Polarized Times\, with Eileen Flanagan
DESCRIPTION:A First Monday Lecture with Eileen Flanagan on her book\, Common Ground: How the Crisis of the Earth Is Saving Us from Our Illusion of Separation. \nInspired by Indigenous communities that were building groundbreaking coalitions with settlers to resist fossil fuel expansion\, Eileen Flanagan set off to learn what could make such collaborations stronger and more common. Through several years of research\, travel\, and climate activism\, she learned many valuable lessons that feel more relevant than ever in these polarized times. She also confronted “the illusion of separation”—the fallacy that we are separate from each other and the Earth that sustains us—and the powerful ways this illusion is manipulated by politicians and corporations who benefit when the rest of us are divided across lines of race\, class\, religion\, and generation.   \nIn her new book\, Common Ground: How the Crisis of the Earth Is Saving Us from Our Illusion of Separation\, Eileen argues that more than technology or even elections\, acting in solidarity with all life is humanity’s best hope for survival.  \nIn this Monday night lecture\, she will share how what she learned on this journey can help us better face today’s political crises.

SUMMARY:Walking Through Time: Lessons from Pendle Hill’s Landscape: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Lloyd Guindon\, Pendle Hill’s Director of Facilities and Grounds\, and Jennifer Walker\, horticultural designer\, arborist\, and educator\, for a walk through the campus landscape—past and present. \nUsing historic maps and firsthand observation\, we’ll explore how the land has changed over time: what was planted with good intentions that we now recognize as invasive\, which trees have stood for a century or more\, and how our current decisions reflect new understandings of ecology\, climate resilience\, and care for community and habitat. We’ll discuss current efforts to reduce tree impacts on buildings while increasing wildlife habitat\, and invite participants to consider how the long view of a place can guide wise stewardship today.

SUMMARY:Christ and Creation: Illuminate Bible Study with Woodbrooke and Barclay Press
DESCRIPTION:An explorative Bible study\, building on the “Christ in Creation” Illuminate publication. This session brings together Woodbrooke and Pendle Hill in an extended conversation about Scripture\, nature\, and environmental witness. \nThis session is an opportunity for the Illuminate authors to share what led them to write\, and what inspired them most about the theme of ‘creation’. The session will be centered around several strands:  \n\nThe Wisdom tradition of Proverbs \n\n\nThe creation theology of Romans \n\n\nThe restorative vision of Isaiah \n\n\nThe raw challenge of Revelation. \n\nParticipants will have the chance to explore some Biblical images and texts in small groups\, as well as engage with the authors. This event will particularly appeal to Friends who want to go deeper and their understanding of the Bible\, and those who wish to ground their climate activism in a rich soil of spiritual insight.

SUMMARY:Revelation in the Bathroom\, and Other Stories: A Pendle Hill Testimony
DESCRIPTION:A First Monday Lecture with Emily Savin. \nIn late November 2012\, deeply burned out from her work on a congressional campaign and seeking respite\, Emily booked a two-night stay at Pendle Hill– without being entirely sure what it was. She stayed for almost two years. Having arrived exhausted\, self-critical\, and politely skeptical about God and religious people\, Emily was surprised to emerge with vitality\, self-compassion\, and a reorientation of her life around faith. She also learned that even religious people can be funny. In this talk\, she will share her Pendle Hill testimony: stories of the encounters with people\, place\, and Spirit that changed her life.  \nPlease note: On-campus attendees will be asked to mask for this lecture.

SUMMARY:Stephen G. Cary Memorial Lecture 2025: Earthquake\, Wind\, and Fire – Seeking the Calm Center
DESCRIPTION:With Max Carter \nWe are living in a time of “earthquake\, wind\, and fire.” Many of us are searching for “still\, small voice of calm\,” a Living Center\, where we can hear the voice of the Divine and find the strength to carry on. \nWhat lessons can we learn from the work of those living through war and catastrophe in Palestine and Israel\, as they speak truth to power in the cause of a just peace? How might their experience inform us as we seek a calm Center in the eye of the storm? \nThis lecture takes its inspiration from the last line of John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem\, “The Brewing of Soma\,” familiar to many in the last verse of the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.” The poem references 1 Kings 19:11-12\, in which the prophet Elijah is confronted by God in the wilderness. Elijah faced tumultuous times in his prophetic task of speaking truth to power. Whittier\, a Quaker abolitionist\, similarly dealt with seismic issues in his commitment to the cause of anti-slavery and social reform. This lecture will invite the audience to listen to the resonances of these words in our times.

SUMMARY:Honoring the Past and Protecting the Future: 80 Years of Resistance Against Nuclear Weapons
DESCRIPTION:August 6 and 9\, 2025 mark 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These attacks killed a quarter of a million people by the end of 1945 and harmed the Hibakusha\, survivors of the atomic bombings\, and their families in the decades to follow. We must honor the legacy of the Hibakusha and commit ourselves to ridding the world of these indiscriminate weapons. \nJoin us for the August First Monday Lecture on August 4 to hear from two professionals who have long worked for nuclear abolition. The lecture will cover the humanitarian and health impacts of nuclear weapons\, testimonies from Hibakusha and other impacted communities\, and the role of faith communities in working to abolish these weapons. Participants will leave with concrete ideas for how they can take action locally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Kairos: A Spiritual Journey
DESCRIPTION:What spiritual practices sustain you? \nWhat does prayer/contemplation mean in your life? \nHow do you support yourself and others during challenging times? \nAre you creating space for spiritual learning? \nHow does your spiritual practice permeate your way of being in the world? \nThe term kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word describing an opportune and decisive moment; a combination of time and place that generates the ideal environment for actions\, words\, and/or movements. \nThis retreat is designed for nurturing the Effetá in our life – the movement of being attentive to the Spirit in our challenging world. Participants will have an opportunity to reconnect with one another as we explore and nurture our experience of being in relationship with the Divine. In this space\, we will be invited to contemplate and reflect on how my/our openness to the Spirit is manifested in my/our presence in the world. \nWe will explore practice and queries that will support participants in their spiritual journey as we individually and collectively build in the importance of hope and love in time of adversity. Participants will create a unique space for spiritual growth by combining key practices from Quaker and other faith traditions\, and they will have the opportunity to engage in contemplative praying of the Scriptures as they experience the deep practice of worship sharing.
