SUMMARY:Embodied Quakerism & Continuing Revelation
DESCRIPTION:An experiential online workshop on World Quaker Day exploring body-based early Quaker practices with Katy Hawkins.  \nThis online workshop explores a longing among contemporary Friends to revitalize the radically embodied culture of the early Quaker movement. We will begin with the briefest of historical introductions\, describing the body-based practices of First-generation Friends (resources will be shared for further independent study). Then we will get down to the business of experimenting with current forms of Embodied Quakerism that reimagine old practices — like Quaker chanting\, prayerful body positioning\, and hands-on healing. After being guided through these practices\, Friends will gather in small break-out groups to share their own corporeal experiences with Spirit\, and/or encounters with other Quakers who might be discovering emergent forms of embodiment that bring something entirely new. Reconvening in the big group\, we’ll have some time to exchange ideas and resources for deepening.  We will close with a period of worship where together we commit to opening our whole selves to how Spirit might want to move through — not just in familiar ways\, but perhaps in radically new/old ones.

SUMMARY:Experiment with Light
DESCRIPTION:A four-part online series exploring early Quaker contemplative practices for spiritual growth.  \nThe “Experiment with Light” is a practice of opening to new possibilities by exploring what it means to “wait in the Light” as early Quakers did. Quaker scholar Rex Ambler put together a prompted meditation based on his studies of early Quaker worship. There are now “Light groups” meeting on a regular basis all over the world.  \nAfter the light illuminates a situation or aspect of ourselves\, accepting what is shown to us brings eventual transformation of our hearts and our lives. We become more peaceful\, joyful\, compassionate\, and loving.    \nThis series is designed both for those experienced with the practice and those who are new to it. We will share introductory materials in advance of the sessions. In our time together\, we will do the meditation\, spend individual time contemplating the messages received (which can include journaling or drawing)\, and share together in small and large groups. Through our four weeks together\, we will become a community of support\, sustenance\, and growth. The final session will include time to share with each other practices for bringing the Experiment into our communities.

SUMMARY:Elements of Quakerism: Training the Facilitators
DESCRIPTION:A seven-week online course on learning and teaching the fundamental elements of Quaker faith and practice  \nThis compelling seven-week course explores the spiritual roots of Quaker faith and practice. The syllabus has a broad audience\, but this unique cohort invites experienced Friends to both participate in the course and learn how to facilitate it in their own style in their own Meetings.  \nThe course is text-based. Each week there is up to about an hour and a half of reading to do before the class. In class\, we will discuss how the ideas in the materials might relate to our own spiritual experiences. Most materials are available to you online. The others are five Pendle Hill Pamphlets that we strongly encourage participants to obtain\, either by borrowing your Meeting library or by purchasing from Pendle Hill. \nThe number of participants is limited to 10\, so that people can get to know and trust each other and share about their own experiences and understandings. Due to the limited size\, we encourage Friends to coordinate with your Meeting and select a single Friend from your Meeting to participate and bring this resource back to your community.

SUMMARY:Welcome\, Friends: Stories of Hope and Hospitality with Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:A participatory conversation with Anton Flores-Maisonet about his book\, Welcome\, Friends: Stories of Hope and Hospitality with Immigrants. \nWelcome\, Friends is a book shaped by open doors\, shared meals\, late-night tears\, and the unshakable belief that love crosses borders. \nIn these pages\, Anton Flores-Maisonet weaves powerful stories of welcoming immigrants – from the grief-soaked silence of detention centers and immigration courts to the everyday grace of a welcome table set for strangers who become friends. With the clarity of a social worker\, the tenderness of a father\, and the conviction of a faith-rooted activist\, Anton invites us into the sacred work of radical hospitality. \nThese stories are not just about immigrants – they are about all of us: our fears\, our hopes\, and our shared call to build a more beautiful world\, one guest at a time. \nReading the book in advance is warmly invited but not expected. This program follows the author’s Cary Memorial Lecture.

SUMMARY:Journey Toward Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a series of four weekend-long retreats over a seven month period to deep-dive into your soul’s journey\, cultivating the ground for hope and renewal in our lives\, our workplaces\, our communities\, and our world. \nAnd you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?”  -Rumi  \nIn every season of life\, there is a call to make sense of our place in the world\, to discover our gifts and ways of being of service\, to live into the highest vision of which we are capable\, to figure out what is ours to do and find a way to do it. How do we discern that call in these tumultuous times? In the midst of political division\, war\, environmental destruction\, and attacks on the most vulnerable members of our communities\, we are pulled in many directions and may be tempted to run away or withdraw into ourselves. What can we offer our beautiful\, needful world? How can we find the quiet power and groundedness that comes from listening to our souls?  \nIn order to hear the still\, small voice within\, we need community. Parker Palmer writes that “If we are willing to embrace the challenge of becoming whole\, we cannot embrace it alone… we need trustworthy relationships and tenacious communities of support.” In The Journey Toward Wholeness\, a four-retreat series based on the work of Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal\, we will create such a community—– a Circle of Trust®. Guided by core principles\, including the belief that everyone has an inner teacher– a reliable and abiding internal source of wisdom– we will create a trustworthy\, welcoming space that honors the integrity and identity of each person.   \nWe will experience the power of stories; practice the skills of deep listening\, asking open and honest questions\, and spiritual accompaniment; explore “shadow” and paradox as sources of insight; and embrace nature as a teacher. We will be invited to consider the questions of our lives using the cycles and metaphors of the seasons\, as well as poetry\, music\, art\, silence\, and reflective practices as doorways for inspiration and transformation.   \nA centerpiece of each retreat will be an opportunity to participate in Clearness Committees\, a process of deep discernment adapted from Quaker practices. All of this takes place amidst the natural beauty and rhythms of community life at Pendle Hill\, which provide an ideal seedbed to inspire\, nourish\, and deepen this work.  \nWhat questions are you holding in this season? Join us for a deep dive into your soul’s journey\, cultivating the ground for hope and renewal in our lives\, our workplaces\, our communities\, and our world.

SUMMARY:Grounding through Grief and Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:An online program offering our broken hearts the medicine of community.   \nAs we set our clocks back and welcome the first earlier sunset\, in the time of All Saints’ Day\, All Souls Day\, Samhain\, and the Day of the Dead\, on the brink of the midterm elections\, we invite you into this virtual sanctuary to slow down and ground in the power of being together.   \nWe will bring our overwhelm and our apprehension\, along with our joy and celebration\, to witness each other – practicing sharing authentically and listening with compassion.  As we breathe together\, we can express the range of our hearts’ pain and longing in a container held by gratitude.

SUMMARY:Worldly Voices of Our Forebearers: The Musical Gifts of American Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:A workshop on musical contributions by immigrants to the United States with Karl Middleman.  \nHad enough of America First? Try America Second! Amidst gaping divisions in today’s politics\, the diverse music of American immigrants stands as moving testimony to the value of our country’s heterogeneity. What better way to celebrate America’s 250th than to pore over the immense contributions of its adopted musicians so eager to blend their voices into the vast mosaic of American culture. Here is the music of Chinese Americans\, Iranian Americans\, Latin Americans\, and African Americans. We’ll behold composers and performers rising to the challenge of preserving their original voices while assimilating into American life. We’ll consider the ways translocation affected mainstream composers such as Sergei Rachmaninoff\, Igor Stravinsky\, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. We’ll learn the inspiring stories of women composers such as Chen Yi and Tania Leon. And finally\, we’ll take a sprightly look at popular music in Vaudeville and operetta. Worldly Voices of Our Forebearers celebrates the incalculable and uplifting musical contributions of America’s diverse population. Rare videos and experiential play will heighten your engagement in this inexhaustible topic.

SUMMARY:Friends’ Decision-Making and Clerking: Participating in Meetings for Business with Joy and Confidence
DESCRIPTION:A weekend workshop with Steve Mohlke and \,O on liberatory clerking skills and principles. \nThis is an opportunity for both new and experienced clerks of Friends’ meetings and committees to meet and think together about the role of presiding clerk in the spiritual practice of meeting for business. \nThe workshop will address racism in the context of Friends’ decision-making and clerking. We need to pay attention to racism because it affects (infects) nearly everything in this society\, and we will be lifting up decision-making processes that seek to liberate the Spirit among all participants. \nThere will be handouts to follow along during the program\, exercises\, and opportunities to share experiences\, with most work being done in a whole group setting. It is expected that each person will leave the weekend with new energy and enthusiasm for being a clerk\, feeling well grounded in both the theoretical and the practical.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Way: A Spring Term in Resident Community
DESCRIPTION:An on-campus resident student program for those seeking space and community in which to share the daily rhythm of learning\, work\, and worship. \nReset\, reconnect\, and rejuvenate on 24 wooded acres outside of Philadelphia. In a moment when the world feels exhausted\, fractured\, and depleted\, Pendle Hill’s Spring Term in Resident Community offers a greenhouse – a protected space to bring ideas\, questions\, and other “seeds” – to nurture these visions into being. Attend one or both sessions as you’re led. \nSession I: Discerning Our Calls\,  February 27 – March 20 \nAre you in a moment of transition or an inflection point in your life? Taking time apart from the rapidly changing world\, we will rest in the eternal and seek greater clarity about how the Spirit is calling us to live and work. Together we will pause to center down\, practice methods of spiritual discernment\, and support each other in being attentive to guidance that comes both from within and without. We will cultivate skills for deep listening\, including attention to our dreams\, as well as Quaker practices of discernment\, such as the clearness committee and faithfulness groups. \nIn the classroom\, we will sift through our various motivations and identify those that are divinely inspired\, using journal writing and sharing with others in pairs and small groups\, and informally with the wider community. Experiential exercises will help us hone our skills in helping each other toward greater clarity and faithfulness. During the three-week course\, each person will have the opportunity to be the focus of a faithfulness group session as well as participate in supporting others\, helping all of us to go forward with renewed clarity and courage. \nThe classroom time will be supported and complemented by Pendle Hill’s rhythms of communal worship and meals\, as well as opportunities for creative exploration in the art studio\, mindful work supporting the campus and collective practices of rest and reflection. \nSession II: Practice in Community\, March 21 – April 17 \nParticipate in Pendle Hill’s traditional rhythm of worship\, learning\, work\, and rest in community\, with opportunities to register for afternoon classes and to practice in faithfulness groups.
