SUMMARY:Walter Francis Elling's 'Redefining Democracy in Red\, White\, Black\, and Blue'
DESCRIPTION:Redefining Democracy in Red\, White\, Black\, and Blue is the latest series by local Quaker artist Walter Francis Elling. In homage to Jasper Johns\, Elling uses actual flags as canvases to provoke responses to issues of race and queer liberation. Spray-painted messages interweave with a color-altered geometric landscape of the flags themselves\, transforming the geometry of the stars and stripes into visual symbols that reimagine patriotism. \nOn Friday\, September 11\, 2026\, enjoy a free Opening Reception for the inaugural Art at Arch Street Meeting House installation\, Redefining Democracy in Red\, White\, Black\, and Blue. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout ART at Arch Street Meeting House\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt at Arch Street Meeting House is an exhibition program that invites regional\, national\, and international artists and community organizations to display 2D artwork in the Reception Room of Arch Street Meeting House (ASMH). \nArt at Arch Street Meeting House transforms three walls of ASMH’s Reception Room into a platform for community-based artwork. It provides an opportunity for Philadelphia’s diverse cultural organizations to present their artistic expressions and use the visual arts to amplify community voices and foster healing and community dialogue. \nThe program is committed to presenting a wide range of ideas and artistic explorations to showcase the important role the arts play in our communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Strong and stable monthly meetings are the foundation of a thriving Quaker community. This is why PYM staff are hosting a monthly virtual gathering of Friends who carry stewardship or fundraising work for their meetings called “Fundraising Friends!” \nThe goal of Fundraising Friends is to ensure that PYM meetings have the financial resources they need to build impactful faith communities\, so we sincerely hope that you will join us! By being a part of Fundraising Friends\, you will find… \n• Mutual support from others who understand the joys and challenges of ensuring their meeting has sufficient funds \n• Practical ideas and resources to strengthen your meeting’s stewardship\, giving\, and community engagement. \n• Shared stories and successes that inspire Light-led approaches to fundraising rooted in Quaker values. \n• Connections across the yearly meeting\, building friendships and collaboration among those doing similar work. \n• Encouragement and learning from PYM Development staff and experienced Friends. \nFundraising Friends meets virtually on the second Thursday of each month at 12 noon and is free and open to any PYM Friends who are interested in or involved with fundraising for their local meeting. \nWhether you come to find ways to strengthen financial health or help other meetings do the same\, you’ll be why new seekers and long-time Friends alike can find a spiritual home at their local Quaker meeting! \nContact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@pym.org or 215-241-7115 with any questions or topics you’d like covered!

SUMMARY:Affinity Groups at Fall Continuing Sessions
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, November 7\, at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting will gather online to begin Fall Continuing Sessions with a special focus on Affinity Groups. Friends will have five breakout rooms to choose from\, each connected to one of five different Affinity Groups. Those who join will be able to move among the rooms that reflect the communities with which they identify\, finding connection with others who may share their experiences and identities. \nIn the main Zoom room\, Friends will share in a time of waiting worship to center us for the weekend under the theme Members One of Another. Affinity Group spaces include Friends of Color\, Friends with Disabilities\, and LGBTQIA+ Friends\, as well as Quaker parents and Quaker grandparents. These gatherings offer a chance for Friends to meet\, connect\, and share about raising families and living their faith in community. \nAll Friends will use the same Zoom link for these gatherings that will be used throughout Fall Continuing Sessions.
