Join Friends school educators in exploring issues of sanctuary, immigration, and community engagement. Hear Liliana Velàsquez and Mark Lyon and learn Liliana’s story.
When she was fourteen, Liliana Velásquez fled horrific violence and poverty in her native Guatemala and headed out alone on foot to the US in pursuit of sanctuary. After four months in a detention center, she was placed in foster care while the courts decided whether to deport her. After finally being granted a green card, Liliana has graduated from high school and has received two scholarships to go to college, where she will study nursing. She tells her story in both English and Spanish in her book, Dreams and Nightmares / Suenos y Pesadillas.
