“DEI won’t work without anti-racism. Antiracism makes the promise of diversity both real and substantial. The difference is crucial.” Through the lens of antiracism, The Golden Rule, “treat others as you want to be treated” becomes the Platinum Rule, “treat others as they want to be treated.”
What do we need to know about the work and leadership of DEI departments and what role can we play in embodying and supporting this transformation of our country, our communities and our souls? Dr. Nance’s Villanova career spans more than four decades, during which time she has served as an administrator, teacher, scholar, activist and ‘support system’ for students, faculty, and staff. She is presently leading a new University Task Force on Race named “Aequitas”, which is charged with assessing the racial climate on campus, identifying areas for improvement, and creating a plan for developing the cultural competence for all students, staff, and faculty. Recently, her DEI office launched a new campaign called Living Race – Transforming Community.
As our faith communities, schools, organizations, and businesses grapple with their individual histories and look to create policies and cultures that are more inclusive and equitable, we find ourselves in great need of professional leadership and deep wisdom. We are struggling. We are hopeful. We believe in continuing revelation.
Know Thy Neighbor is a continuing series of conversations intended to share our history and to open discussions exploring civic and cultural engagement issues with the community.
