Byberry Friends Meeting in Philadelphia will share what they’ve learned from over six years of intentional community engagement—opening their doors wider, building local connections, and bringing new energy and people into the Meeting.
Mary Ellen McNish will tell the story of how their small Meeting came together around a path forward, using their assets (history and property), invested its own resources, secured additional funding, renovated its space, and hired people to help put the plan into action.
Then Michael Doyle, their Community Engagement Coordinator, will describe how regular hospitality, community organizing, and partnerships with Quaker-friendly groups has brought hundreds of new people into the meetinghouse and new friends joining the Meeting.
Mike and Mary Ellen share logistics of how events, rentals, cultivating community contacts, property management, finding the right persons for the job, and using online and social media can help Meetings become more visible and connected.
And then there’s the big question: Once people come through the door, how do we make them feel welcome—and invite them back?
