SUMMARY:The Drinkers & Prisoners of Congress at Arch Street Meeting House
DESCRIPTION:Norman E. Donoghue\, II\, will discuss his book\, Prisoners of Congress: Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-1778\, and Philadelphia Quaker\, Henry Drinker\, during the American Revolution on March 19\, 2026\, at ASMH. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5:30 PM – Refreshments \n\n\n6:30 PM – Keynote Speaker: Norman E. Donoghue\, II\, Prisoners of Congress: Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-1778 \n\n\n7:30 PM – Book Signing: Author Norman E. Donoghue\, II will be available for questions and book signings. \n\n\nIn 1777\, Congress labeled Quakers who would not take up arms in support of the War of Independence as “the most Dangerous Enemies America knows” and ordered Pennsylvania and Delaware to apprehend them. In response\, Keystone State officials sent twenty men—seventeen of whom were Quakers—into exile\, banishing them to Virginia\, where they were held for a year. \nPrisoners of Congress reconstructs this moment in American history through the experiences of four families: the Drinkers\, the Fishers\, the Pembertons\, and the Gilpins. Identifying them as the new nation’s first political prisoners\, Norman E. Donoghue II relates how the Quakers\, once the preeminent power in Pennsylvania and an integral constituency of the colonies and early republic\, came to be reviled by patriots who saw refusal to fight the English as borderline sedition. \nSurprising\, vital\, and vividly told\, this narrative of political and literal warfare waged by the United States against a pacifist religious group during the Revolutionary War era sheds new light on an essential aspect of American history. It will appeal to anyone interested in learning more about the nation’s founding.

SUMMARY:An International Gathering of Young Adult Friends at Jordans Meetinghouse\, UK
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share news about an upcoming international gathering of Young Adult Quakers (ages 18 to 35) from the 13th to the 17th of August\, as we seek a deepening of our faith. We will gather at the Jordans Meeting House & Quaker Centre in Beaconsfield\, UK. \nIn the midst of a hostile world and a future filled with uncertainty\, we find the need for a faith that can nourish us. We hope Friends will join us for some days together\, as we seek depth and richness\, helping each other to find \nA faith that sustains\, A faith that gives life\, A Spirit that guides. \nThe gathering will be grounded in worship\, giving ample space to listen to the promptings of Love and Truth in our hearts. We welcome participants bringing their whole selves\, our commonalities and our differences\, as well as gifts. Everyone is encouraged to use the language that speaks their own spiritual truth. Let us collectively choose to live in the Light\, and explore where that choice leads us. We extend the welcome to bring our whole lives into the Spirit\, and grapple with the question: what does Love require of us? How are we led by the Spirit? How can we courageously engage with the world\, ourselves\, and each other? How can we help each other go down to the Well of Living Water\, and to drink from it? \nThis gathering follows one from last year which was also held at Jordans Meeting House\, the epistle for which can be read here. Similar to last year\, we hope to offer this gathering nearly free of charge. We ask for a £10 ($12) contribution that will go towards food costs. To register\, Friends can fill out the registration form here.
