SUMMARY:Elements of Quakerism: Training the Facilitators
DESCRIPTION:A seven-week online course on learning and teaching the fundamental elements of Quaker faith and practice  \nThis compelling seven-week course explores the spiritual roots of Quaker faith and practice. The syllabus has a broad audience\, but this unique cohort invites experienced Friends to both participate in the course and learn how to facilitate it in their own style in their own Meetings.  \nThe course is text-based. Each week there is up to about an hour and a half of reading to do before the class. In class\, we will discuss how the ideas in the materials might relate to our own spiritual experiences. Most materials are available to you online. The others are five Pendle Hill Pamphlets that we strongly encourage participants to obtain\, either by borrowing your Meeting library or by purchasing from Pendle Hill. \nThe number of participants is limited to 10\, so that people can get to know and trust each other and share about their own experiences and understandings. Due to the limited size\, we encourage Friends to coordinate with your Meeting and select a single Friend from your Meeting to participate and bring this resource back to your community.

SUMMARY:Extended Meeting for Worship
DESCRIPTION:Extended worship is a period of sitting with and in the divine spirit. In the manner of Early Friends\, we gather for a prolonged period of silent reflection and inward searching\, usually remaining in waiting worship for about 3 hours\, with time at the conclusion for afterthoughts and sharing. \nIn earlier times Quakers would often worship for hours\, fully expectant and deeply patient for the Living Presence to do its work in the gathered body of Friends. These gathered experiences were core to Quaker convincement\, personal transformation\, and prophetic challenges to the cultural behaviors in the places where Quakers lived. \nWe will gather in silence\, with hearts and minds open and bent towards listening to that of God among and within us. Spoken ministry may arise from the silence\, though it is not uncommon for worship to remain silent for the duration of our time together. In extended worship\, we seek to listen more clearly. To this end\, we hold the silence as ministry itself\, which has the capacity for transformation and transcendence. \nWe will gather in Arch Street Meetinghouse at 2pm for three hours of expectant waiting worship. Friends are free to get up and move around\, to lie down on the benches\, to use the bathroom\, even to take a walk outside and rejoin the worship as led. Following the worship\, we take some time for some sharing about our experiences of the practice. \nTransformative experiences can happen when the Living Presence has adequate time to remove the spiritual cobwebs and to shine a Light on the deep calls that are beckoning us to change and to make the world a better place. Extended worship is an experience for all those who are seeking\, wishing to deepen their connection to the divine within\, and expand their individual and communal spiritual lives. It is God’s work to awaken people to God’s wisdom\, guidance\, and love. These extended meetings for worship can provide a seedbed for that awakening.

SUMMARY:Experiment with Light
DESCRIPTION:A four-part online series exploring early Quaker contemplative practices for spiritual growth.  \nThe “Experiment with Light” is a practice of opening to new possibilities by exploring what it means to “wait in the Light” as early Quakers did. Quaker scholar Rex Ambler put together a prompted meditation based on his studies of early Quaker worship. There are now “Light groups” meeting on a regular basis all over the world.  \nAfter the light illuminates a situation or aspect of ourselves\, accepting what is shown to us brings eventual transformation of our hearts and our lives. We become more peaceful\, joyful\, compassionate\, and loving.    \nThis series is designed both for those experienced with the practice and those who are new to it. We will share introductory materials in advance of the sessions. In our time together\, we will do the meditation\, spend individual time contemplating the messages received (which can include journaling or drawing)\, and share together in small and large groups. Through our four weeks together\, we will become a community of support\, sustenance\, and growth. The final session will include time to share with each other practices for bringing the Experiment into our communities.

Parker Palmer writes that “If we are willing to embrace the challenge of becoming whole\, we cannot embrace it alone… we need trustworthy relationships and tenacious communities of support.” In The Journey Toward Wholeness\, a four-retreat series based on the work of Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal\, we will create such a community—– a Circle of Trust®. Guided by core principles\, including the belief that everyone has an inner teacher– a reliable and abiding internal source of wisdom– we will create a trustworthy\, welcoming space that honors the integrity and identity of each person.   \nWe will experience the power of stories; practice the skills of deep listening\, asking open and honest questions\, and spiritual accompaniment; explore “shadow” and paradox as sources of insight; and embrace nature as a teacher. How do we discern that call in these tumultuous times? In the midst of political division\, war\, environmental destruction\, and attacks on the most vulnerable members of our communities\, we are pulled in many directions and may be tempted to run away or withdraw into ourselves. What can we offer our beautiful\, needful world? How can we find the quiet power and groundedness that comes from listening to our souls?  \nIn order to hear the still\, small voice within\, we need community. Parker Palmer writes that “If we are willing to embrace the challenge of becoming whole\, we cannot embrace it alone… we need trustworthy relationships and tenacious communities of support.” In The Journey Toward Wholeness\, a four-retreat series based on the work of Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal\, we will create such a community—– a Circle of Trust®. Guided by core principles\, including the belief that everyone has an inner teacher– a reliable and abiding internal source of wisdom– we will create a trustworthy\, welcoming space that honors the integrity and identity of each person.   \nWe will experience the power of stories; practice the skills of deep listening\, asking open and honest questions\, and spiritual accompaniment; explore “shadow” and paradox as sources of insight; and embrace nature as a teacher. SUMMARY:Finding Your Way: A Spring Term in Resident Community
DESCRIPTION:An on-campus resident student program for those seeking space and community in which to share the daily rhythm of learning\, work\, and worship. \nReset\, reconnect\, and rejuvenate on 24 wooded acres outside of Philadelphia. In a moment when the world feels exhausted\, fractured\, and depleted\, Pendle Hill’s Spring Term in Resident Community offers a greenhouse – a protected space to bring ideas\, questions\, and other “seeds” – to nurture these visions into being. Attend one or both sessions as you’re led. \nSession I: Discerning Our Calls\,  February 27 – March 20 \nAre you in a moment of transition or an inflection point in your life? Taking time apart from the rapidly changing world\, we will rest in the eternal and seek greater clarity about how the Spirit is calling us to live and work. Together we will pause to center down\, practice methods of spiritual discernment\, and support each other in being attentive to guidance that comes both from within and without. We will cultivate skills for deep listening\, including attention to our dreams\, as well as Quaker practices of discernment\, such as the clearness committee and faithfulness groups. \nIn the classroom\, we will sift through our various motivations and identify those that are divinely inspired\, using journal writing and sharing with others in pairs and small groups\, and informally with the wider community. Experiential exercises will help us hone our skills in helping each other toward greater clarity and faithfulness. During the three-week course\, each person will have the opportunity to be the focus of a faithfulness group session as well as participate in supporting others\, helping all of us to go forward with renewed clarity and courage. \nThe classroom time will be supported and complemented by Pendle Hill’s rhythms of communal worship and meals\, as well as opportunities for creative exploration in the art studio\, mindful work supporting the campus and collective practices of rest and reflection. \nSession II: Practice in Community\, March 21 – April 17 \nParticipate in Pendle Hill’s traditional rhythm of worship\, learning\, work\, and rest in community\, with opportunities to register for afternoon classes and to practice in faithfulness groups.

When will you begin that long journey into yourself?”  -Rumi  \nIn every season of life\, there is a call to make sense of our place in the world\, to discover our gifts and ways of being of service\, to live into the highest vision of which we are capable\, to figure out what is ours to do and find a way to do it. How do we discern that call in these tumultuous times? In the midst of political division\, war\, environmental destruction\, and attacks on the most vulnerable members of our communities\, we are pulled in many directions and may be tempted to run away or withdraw into ourselves. What can we offer our beautiful\, needful world? How can we find the quiet power and groundedness that comes from listening to our souls?  \nIn order to hear the still\, small voice within\, we need community. Parker Palmer writes that “If we are willing to embrace the challenge of becoming whole\, we cannot embrace it alone… we need trustworthy relationships and tenacious communities of support.” In The Journey Toward Wholeness\, a four-retreat series based on the work of Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal\, we will create such a community—– a Circle of Trust®. Guided by core principles\, including the belief that everyone has an inner teacher– a reliable and abiding internal source of wisdom– we will create a trustworthy\, welcoming space that honors the integrity and identity of each person.   \nWe will experience the power of stories; practice the skills of deep listening\, asking open and honest questions\, and spiritual accompaniment; explore “shadow” and paradox as sources of insight; and embrace nature as a teacher. We will be invited to consider the questions of our lives using the cycles and metaphors of the seasons\, as well as poetry\, music\, art\, silence\, and reflective practices as doorways for inspiration and transformation.   \nA centerpiece of each retreat will be an opportunity to participate in Clearness Committees\, a process of deep discernment adapted from Quaker practices. SUMMARY:Silent Witness Signs of Fascism
DESCRIPTION:As Friends are aware – the Nation is again under increasing threat of a full loss of Democracy and a slide into Authoritarianism and Fascism. Silent Witness Events are occurring Nationwide. Silent Witnesses are spiritual and educative and peaceful to the core. They are not protests or “demonstrations” rather they are spiritual witness – using our own lives and bodies to say “we see” we witness the signs of fascism occurring around us now.
