SUMMARY:New Draft Law Passed: People of Conscience Get Ready
DESCRIPTION:Quaker author Curt Torell will explain recent legal changes in draft registration and outline steps for conscientious objectors to war to respond. Then the group will self-organize next steps for mutual support and counsel. Everyone is welcome. \nJoin in-person or on Zoom at the following Meetinghouses: \n\nMontclair Meeting (289 Park St\, Upper Montclair\, NJ 07043): April 26\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nOld Chatham Meeting (539 Co Rd 13\, Old Chatham\, NY 12136): May 3\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nBrooklyn Meeting (110 Schermerhorn Street Brooklyn\, NY 11201): May 11\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm\n\nIn the session\, we’ll consider together questions such as: What is conscience? Is your conscience troubled? How do you act on conscience? Who is a conscientious objector? \nFor context\, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed at the end of last year will make federal Selective Service draft registration automatic for all men aged 18-25 starting in December 2026. The US Government wouldn’t bother doing this if they didn’t plan to use it. Unfortunately\, a person cannot file a conscientious objection claim until getting an induction notice once a draft is instated\, sometimes giving less than 10 days to respond. Are you\, your family\, and your faith community prepared? \nRegister at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScKVvzB5SN6xYufRrPGDA21ffRnGfIi1ApOQT7GSpF9bV5uUA/viewform.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Unveiling - "The History of Quakers: A Religious Revolution" at Arch Street Meeting House
DESCRIPTION:The History of Quakers: A Religious Revolution is a dynamic new experience featuring immersive displays\, untold stories\, and rarely seen artifacts at Arch Street Meeting House\, one of Philadelphia’s most significant historic sites. \nThe three-centuries-old National Historical Landmark and museum in Old City welcomes visitors to explore the early origins of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and to witness their transformation from 17th-century spiritual radicals into leaders in the fight for religious freedom in the United States. \nDiscover the 1688 Germantown Petition Against Slavery – the first documented protest against enslavement in the U.S. – and stories of figures like Major Samuel Nicholas\, the first commandant of the Continental Marines\, who is interred within ASMH’s burial grounds. \nThe exhibit follows the Quaker values of equality\, peace\, and social change from the American Revolution to today. \nThe exhibit will be on view beginning April 9\, 2026. Visit the museum Thursday – Sunday\, 10 AM – 4 PM\, and check HistoricASMH.org for updated hours. \nA FREE Opening Reception will be held Thursday\, April 30\, 2026\, from 5 PM – 7 PM at Arch Street Meeting House.

SUMMARY:Extended Meeting for Worship
DESCRIPTION:Extended worship is a period of sitting with and in the divine spirit. In the manner of Early Friends\, we gather for a prolonged period of silent reflection and inward searching\, usually remaining in waiting worship for ~3 hours\, with time at the conclusion for afterthoughts and sharing. \nWhat can you expect? \nWe will gather in silence\, with hearts and minds open and bent towards listening to that of God among and within us. Spoken ministry may arise from the silence\, though it is not uncommon for worship to remain silent for the duration of our time together. Messages should be a deepening of the silence we share. The purpose of silent worship is not to speak\, but to listen more clearly. To this end\, we hold the silence as ministry itself\, which has the capacity for transformation and transcendence. \nExtended worship is open to all those who wish to deepen their spiritual practice and relationship with Spirit. All those who wish for more inward reflection and connection to the divine within. Those seeking to expand their individual and communal spiritual lives.

SUMMARY:Talk on the Sermon on the Mount
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker Art Hartwick will come to Cropwell Meeting in Marlton\, N.J.\, to share about Jesus’s most famous sermon and its call to us today. \nMany of Jesus’s best known sayings come from the sermon recorded in Matthew 5-7. Starting with the Beatitudes (“Blessed are the poor in spirit\, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”) to the metaphors of spiritual salt and light\, to some of Jesus’s most famous parables\, and to his prayer for us\, it’s been an inspiration to millions of followers over the centuries. \nSo many Quaker teachings—and odd customs!—can also be traced to the Sermon\, from our pacifism and love of enemy\, to our refusal to swear oaths\, to our history of plainness and simplicity. Come join us in what promises to be a lively discussion of the legacy of Jesus’s teachings for our current lives. \nApril 19\n10am: Worship\n11am: Presentation by Hardwick\n12pm: Potluck lunch

SUMMARY:Extended Meeting for Worship
DESCRIPTION:Swarthmore Friends Meeting invites you to  a day of extended meeting for worship and spiritual fellowship with other Friends. All are welcome. Please bring a bag lunch.  Beverages will be provided..\n\n\n\nExtended worship is an opportunity to be seeped in the Divine in the company of other Friends. For over twenty-five years\, Friends in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting have met periodically on Saturdays for a full morning of unprogrammed worship (usually about three hours)\, followed by fellowship over a bag lunch.   In the afternoon we share how we were touched by the Spirit in the morning worship\, and we center again in gathered silence together. \nFor many this is a regular practice that helps us hear how God is leading us\, a mini-retreat in the midst of busy lives.  During the meeting for worship\, Friends are invited to make their bodies comfortable and\, as needed\, to quietly leave and then to return to the room. Although moments of restlessness may occur\, especially at the one hour mark\, most newcomers to Extended Worship are surprised at how quickly time passes\, and by about how refreshed they feel.  All are welcome. \nSince 2020\, gatherings for extended worship have been held online monthly via Zoom\, usually on the first Saturday of the month.  In-person gatherings in the Philadelphia area are now infrequent\, and a special opportunity to be gathered by the Spirit together.  In-person gatherings are now being held about five times a year at Quaker Meetings in New England.\nRemember to bring your lunch.  Attend just a portion of the day or the full day. There is no cost to attend. No advance registration is required\, except if you require child care.  If you would like child care\, please contact us at least two weeks in advance.\nSchedule (times are Eastern Time\, USA): \n9:15 to 9:30 Gathering and Welcome \n9:30 to 12:30 Extended Meeting for Worship \n12:30 to 1:30 Brown Bag Lunch (bring your own) \n1:30 to 3:00 Worship Sharing \n3:00 to 3:15 Clean-up and departure.

Newtown\, PA 18940\nCalling the Young Adult F/friends community (ages 18-35)\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n This is an overnight event\, and we will be staying at Newtown Friends Meeting on Friday and Saturday night.  Don’t forget to pack your sleeping bags\, pillows\, clothes\, necessary bathroom items\, medications\, and anything else you might need! \nIf you are not able to stay overnight\, we invite you to join us instead on Saturday! It is also okay if you are only able to come on Friday or Sunday. Please let us know in the registration that you will be staying for only part of the retreat so we can plan meals accordingly! \nThis will be a time for fellowship\, worship sharing\, and community building. Young Adult Friends will participate in a workshop\, small groups\, and other activities touching on sex and sexuality and the ways they intertwine with our lives and Quakerism. There will be time for worship throughout the weekend ending with us joining Newtown Friends Meeting on Sunday. \nThe cost for this event is $40. The fees help to offset the costs of food\, activities\, and the honoraria for the facilitators. If this cost is at all prohibitive\, please reach out to Claire Kinnel at ckinnel@pym.org. There is scholarship money available. \nThis will be a mask optional event. We will prepare all our meals together. We will be sleeping on the floor of the Meeting House. Please email ckinnel@pym.org if you have any accommodation needs. \nCommunity Expectations: \nThe Young Adult F/friends community is a collaborative community where we share responsibility and work together to support each of our gatherings. This means\, each F/friend is expected to support making and setting up meals\, cleaning up dishes and shared areas\, collecting and disposing of trash\, organizing spaces and activities to their original layout\, and other such responsibilities. We welcome each F/friend contributing to the collective work of the Young Adult community in ways that feel comfortable and accessible. We share responsibility to align with our Quaker values of community and service\, and to ensure that the task of tending to our community is distributed fairly among F/friends. \nRegistration closes Wednesday\, April 15th\, 2026.  \n \n Register
