DESCRIPTION:Swarthmore Friends Meeting invites you to  a day of extended meeting for worship and spiritual fellowship with other Friends. All are welcome. Please bring a bag lunch.  Beverages will be provided..\n\n\n\nExtended worship is an opportunity to be seeped in the Divine in the company of other Friends. For over twenty-five years\, Friends in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting have met periodically on Saturdays for a full morning of unprogrammed worship (usually about three hours)\, followed by fellowship over a bag lunch.   In the afternoon we share how we were touched by the Spirit in the morning worship\, and we center again in gathered silence together. \nFor many this is a regular practice that helps us hear how God is leading us\, a mini-retreat in the midst of busy lives.  During the meeting for worship\, Friends are invited to make their bodies comfortable and\, as needed\, to quietly leave and then to return to the room. Although moments of restlessness may occur\, especially at the one hour mark\, most newcomers to Extended Worship are surprised at how quickly time passes\, and by about how refreshed they feel.  All are welcome. \nSince 2020\, gatherings for extended worship have been held online monthly via Zoom\, usually on the first Saturday of the month.  In-person gatherings in the Philadelphia area are now infrequent\, and a special opportunity to be gathered by the Spirit together.  In-person gatherings are now being held about five times a year at Quaker Meetings in New England.\nRemember to bring your lunch.  Attend just a portion of the day or the full day.There is no cost to attend. DESCRIPTION:Spring Retreat: Sex and Sexuality and Quakerism\nApril 17th – 19th | 6:00 p.m. Fri. – 12:00 p.m. Sun.\nNewtown Friends Meeting | 219 Court Street. Newtown\, PA 18940\nCalling the Young Adult F/friends community (ages 18-35)\n			\n				Register\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				This is an overnight event\, and we will be staying at Newtown Friends Meeting on Friday and Saturday night.  Don’t forget to pack your sleeping bags\, pillows\, clothes\, necessary bathroom items\, medications\, and anything else you might need! \nIf you are not able to stay overnight\, we invite you to join us instead on Saturday! It is also okay if you are only able to come on Friday or Sunday. Please let us know in the registration that you will be staying for only part of the retreat so we can plan meals accordingly! \nThis will be a time for fellowship\, worship sharing\, and community building. Young Adult Friends will participate in a workshop\, small groups\, and other activities touching on sex and sexuality and the ways they intertwine with our lives and Quakerism. There will be time for worship throughout the weekend ending with us joining Newtown Friends Meeting on Sunday. \nThe cost for this event is $40. The fees help to offset the costs of food\, activities\, and the honoraria for the facilitators. DMOST (Delaware Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment) and POLST (Pennsylvania Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) are documents which must be signed by a physician\, generally involving a person with terminal illness. A DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) instructs EMTs and medical personnel not to perform CPR if a patient’s breathing or heartbeat stops. \nDr. Maria D’Souza will help us understand the complex details of these documents and the experience they relate to. She is a geriatrician with expertise in dementia care and caregiver support. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and completed her residency training in internal medicine at the University of Washington\, 3-year geriatrics fellowship at Duke University\, and a Master of Public Health degree at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She leads the COMPASS Dementia Care program in Wilmington. \nErica Blanco Sacci is an experienced Registered Nurse with over a decade of clinical expertise in emergency care\, critical transport\, and nursing education. Currently serving as a Flight/ground Transport RN with PennStar Flight Team\, Erica plays a key role in managing critically ill patients. Erica has held staff nursing roles at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center\, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital\, and Riddle Hospital. \nThomas Vogelgesang is an NREMT-P Flight Paramedic with over 15 years of experience in emergency medical services and critical care transport. Currently serving with PennSTAR Flight at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. It Happens When We Sing takes us into the song circle’s past and present\, interweaving intimate stories of isolation and connection\, hardship and resilience\, loneliness and love. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Biography – Polly Wells\n \n\n\n\nPolly Wells trained as a journalist and worked in factual television in the U.S. and Canada for thirty years. She is also a photographer\, an artist\, and the author of “Freaking Out.” This is the second of two films she directed inside the vibrant musical subculture of informal singing. \n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Statement\n\nI grew up with a hunger to sing. When I discovered the Friday Night Song Circle it felt like a gift from our collective past\, a living\, breathing antidote to the pervasive loneliness of modern life.

News coverage often comes without the entire context\, so we can end up losing our ability to honor the humanity of all involved. When we stop seeing a person or group as human\, we much more easily discount and discredit their experiences and humanity\, making it much more easy to deny their needs and right to exist. \nThere are many things to consider: I think about the ways US taxes fund the conflict. It’s challenging to follow accurate ins and outs of Israeli politics\, to follow Palestinian politics in the West Bank and Gaza. The need to sift through: Is it or is it not occupation? Is it\, or is it not\, apartheid? Is it \, or is it not\, antisemitism?  These questions deflect us from the basic simplicity of the situation- a long history of injustice. \nWhen I look at this through my Quaker lens\, through what I value – that there is divinity in each person\, the cornerstone for our testimony of equality\, the cornerstone for our peace testimony – I know that everyone deserves systems that center justice. So how can I stand aside when systems of injustice limit the existence of a people? What can we do to help remove the occasion for war? The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza war is over 70\,000. Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank increased under cover of the war; and the war spread to neighboring countries. \nTo advocate for justice\, it helps to understand more deeply the connections these two peoples have to the land\, to understand a fuller history of the middle east than we get from the news stories\, and what we have been taught\, often predominantly framed by western assumptions\, to learn there are multiple definitions of antisemitism\, the origins of Zionism\, and the realities of apartheid in the region. \nWhy Palestine Matters is a collection of personal stories\, history\, data\, experience\, and the thinking of a variety of people with the experience of the area and the knowledge of history with a Middle East lens. It is a curriculum that provides context for the challenges of Palestinian lives that have continued to be upended since the 1930s. It adds to our ability to address justice for Palestinians and safety for Israel. The curriculum helps uncover the history of the land that has not been shared broadly. \nMembers of the Middle East Collaborative work with allies from other organizations to present the 6 session course of Why Palestine Matters beginning February 12.  See the PYM calendar to register. DESCRIPTION:Extended worship is a period of sitting with and in the divine spirit. In the manner of Early Friends\, we gather for a prolonged period of silent reflection and inward searching\, usually remaining in waiting worship for ~3 hours\, with time at the conclusion for afterthoughts and sharing. \nWe will gather in silence\, with hearts and minds open and bent towards listening to that of God among and within us. Spoken ministry may arise from the silence\, though it is not uncommon for worship to remain silent for the duration of our time together. Messages should be a deepening of the silence we share. The purpose of silent worship is not to speak\, but to listen more clearly. To this end\, we hold the silence as ministry itself\, which has the capacity for transformation and transcendence. \nExtended Worship is open to all those who wish to deepen their spiritual practice and relationship with Spirit. News coverage often comes without the entire context\, so we can end up losing our ability to honor the humanity of all involved. When we stop seeing a person or group as human\, we much more easily discount and discredit their experiences and humanity\, making it much more easy to deny their needs and right to exist. \nThere are many things to consider: I think about the ways US taxes fund the conflict. It’s challenging to follow accurate ins and outs of Israeli politics\, to follow Palestinian politics in the West Bank and Gaza. The need to sift through: Is it or is it not occupation? Is it\, or is it not\, apartheid? Is it \, or is it not\, antisemitism?  These questions deflect us from the basic simplicity of the situation- a long history of injustice. \nWhen I look at this through my Quaker lens\, through what I value – that there is divinity in each person\, the cornerstone for our testimony of equality\, the cornerstone for our peace testimony – I know that everyone deserves systems that center justice. So how can I stand aside when systems of injustice limit the existence of a people? What can we do to help remove the occasion for war? The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza war is over 70\,000. Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank increased under cover of the war; and the war spread to neighboring countries. \nTo advocate for justice\, it helps to understand more deeply the connections these two peoples have to the land\, to understand a fuller history of the middle east than we get from the news stories\, and what we have been taught\, often predominantly framed by western assumptions\, to learn there are multiple definitions of antisemitism\, the origins of Zionism\, and the realities of apartheid in the region. \nWhy Palestine Matters is a collection of personal stories\, history\, data\, experience\, and the thinking of a variety of people with the experience of the area and the knowledge of history with a Middle East lens. It is a curriculum that provides context for the challenges of Palestinian lives that have continued to be upended since the 1930s. It adds to our ability to address justice for Palestinians and safety for Israel. The curriculum helps uncover the history of the land that has not been shared broadly. \nMembers of the Middle East Collaborative work with allies from other organizations to present the 6 session course of Why Palestine Matters beginning February 12.  See the PYM calendar to register. Donoghue\, II\, Prisoners of Congress: Philadelphia’s Quakers in Exile\, 1777-1778 \n\n\n7:30 PM – Book Signing: Author Norman E. Donoghue\, II will be available for questions and book signings. \n\n\nIn 1777\, Congress labeled Quakers who would not take up arms in support of the War of Independence as “the most Dangerous Enemies America knows” and ordered Pennsylvania and Delaware to apprehend them. In response\, Keystone State officials sent twenty men—seventeen of whom were Quakers—into exile\, banishing them to Virginia\, where they were held for a year. \nPrisoners of Congress reconstructs this moment in American history through the experiences of four families: the Drinkers\, the Fishers\, the Pembertons\, and the Gilpins. Identifying them as the new nation’s first political prisoners\, Norman E. Donoghue II relates how the Quakers\, once the preeminent power in Pennsylvania and an integral constituency of the colonies and early republic\, came to be reviled by patriots who saw refusal to fight the English as borderline sedition. \nSurprising\, vital\, and vividly told\, this narrative of political and literal warfare waged by the United States against a pacifist religious group during the Revolutionary War era sheds new light on an essential aspect of American history. It will appeal to anyone interested in learning more about the nation’s founding.
