SUMMARY:Affinity Groups at Fall Continuing Sessions
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, November 7\, at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.\, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting will gather online to begin Fall Continuing Sessions with a special focus on Affinity Groups. Friends will have five breakout rooms to choose from\, each connected to one of five different Affinity Groups. Those who join will be able to move among the rooms that reflect the communities with which they identify\, finding connection with others who may share their experiences and identities. \nIn the main Zoom room\, Friends will share in a time of waiting worship to center us for the weekend under the theme Members One of Another. Affinity Group spaces include Friends of Color\, Friends with Disabilities\, and LGBTQIA+ Friends\, as well as Quaker parents and Quaker grandparents. These gatherings offer a chance for Friends to meet\, connect\, and share about raising families and living their faith in community. \nAll Friends will use the same Zoom link for these gatherings that will be used throughout Fall Continuing Sessions. The link will be shared with everyone who registers\, whether attending the rest of sessions online\, person\, or just the Friday Affinity Group Opportunity. \nRegister for Affinity Groups

SUMMARY:“Experiment with Light”
DESCRIPTION:This is a three-session online series introducing early Quaker contemplative practices for spiritual growth. It is hosted by Pendle Hill and led by Shulamith Clearbridge of Swarthmore Meeting. \nThe “Experiment with Light” is a practice of opening to new possibilities by exploring what it means to “wait in the Light” as early Quakers did.  Quaker scholar Rex Ambler put together a prompted meditation based on his studies of early Quaker worship. There are now “Light groups” meeting on a regular basis all over the world.  \nAfter the light illuminates a situation or aspect of ourselves\, accepting what is shown to us brings eventual transformation of our hearts and our lives. We become more peaceful\, joyful\, compassionate\, and loving.    \nIn this series\, we will do the meditation\, contemplate the messages we receive\, reflect through ways such as journaling or drawing\, and share together in community. Through our three weeks together\, we will become a community of support\, sustenance\, and growth.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK! Spice Up Your Life with Jay Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Join Quaker author and minister Jay Marshall in conversation with Windy Cooler\, convener of the Friends Incubator for Public Ministry\, for an evening that celebrates Jay’s new book\, Spice Up Your Life: Reflections on the Testimonies. \nA lifelong Friend and former dean of Earlham School of Religion (as well as active advisory board member for the Incubator!)\, Jay writes with warmth and wit about bringing creativity\, intention\, and joy into the ordinary patterns of daily life. Drawing on stories from his pastoral work\, travels around the world\, and reflections on Quaker testimonies such as peace\, equality\, and simplicity\, Spice Up Your Life invites readers to see faithful living as an adventure of curiosity and deep listening. \nFor Quaker public ministers\, Jay’s reflections offer a timely reminder that spiritual vitality grows out of attention to both the inner life and the small acts of love that make up community. His attention to silence\, storytelling\, and simplicity resonates with the daily work of those who serve publicly\, helping us find stillness beneath the noise and courage to live out our leadings with joy. \nIn this live conversation\, Jay and Windy will explore: \n \n\n\nHow Quaker testimonies continue to shape the rhythms of modern life and ministry \n\n\nWhy storytelling and writing remain central to the Quaker witness \n\n\nWhat silence and simplicity can teach us about presence and discernment \n\n\nHow curiosity\, travel\, and openness to difference keep ministry fresh and creative \n\n\nExpect an evening full of humor\, reflection\, and depth as two seasoned ministers consider how to “season” our lives and our service with imagination\, gratitude\, and delight. \n Free and open to all. Donations very welcome. All donations support the grassroots\, collaborative work of the Friends Incubator for Public Ministry.

SUMMARY:Building Common Ground in Polarized Times\, with Eileen Flanagan
DESCRIPTION:A First Monday Lecture with Eileen Flanagan on her book\, Common Ground: How the Crisis of the Earth Is Saving Us from Our Illusion of Separation. \nInspired by Indigenous communities that were building groundbreaking coalitions with settlers to resist fossil fuel expansion\, Eileen Flanagan set off to learn what could make such collaborations stronger and more common. Through several years of research\, travel\, and climate activism\, she learned many valuable lessons that feel more relevant than ever in these polarized times. She also confronted “the illusion of separation”—the fallacy that we are separate from each other and the Earth that sustains us—and the powerful ways this illusion is manipulated by politicians and corporations who benefit when the rest of us are divided across lines of race\, class\, religion\, and generation.   \nIn her new book\, Common Ground: How the Crisis of the Earth Is Saving Us from Our Illusion of Separation\, Eileen argues that more than technology or even elections\, acting in solidarity with all life is humanity’s best hope for survival.  \nIn this Monday night lecture\, she will share how what she learned on this journey can help us better face today’s political crises.

SUMMARY:What is Quaker Process?
DESCRIPTION:Join the Barnegat (NJ\, USA) Friends by Zoom on Thursday\, October 30\, 2025 at 7 pm Eastern US time. \nRegister here:  barnegatquakers.tiny.us/QuakerProcess \nAuthor Mathilda Navias will share an in-depth understanding of Quaker processes and insights into living in the Spirit. \nQuaker process is much more than what goes on during business meeting. It encompasses how we interact with one another. It includes how the different pieces of our local meetings interact. It includes how we deal with leadings\, concerns\, and discernment\, both as individuals and as corporate bodies. Good Quaker process helps us unite and build community. \nIn earlier times\, Quaker culture and processes were learned by children and new attenders by observation\, osmosis\, and mentoring. Today newcomers are welcomed warmly but may feel a little lost when practices and jargon are not explained or when conscious guidance is not offered. \nIn her book\, Quaker Process for Friends on the Benches\, author Mathilda Navias fills many gaps by documenting processes about which little has been written. Her book encompasses worldwide practices across Quaker branches and traditions. The book helps Friends find and use processes that work well\, that bring everyone into unity and loving concern for one another\, and that resonate with the greater truths\, where ensuing actions are undergirded by the power of the Spirit. \nUnderstanding Quakerism is of value to anyone who cares about the world in which we live. Quaker practices offer a way of living a life of deep connection\, a life in harmony with one’s internal spirit and with others. \n“Mathilda Navias has written a remarkable book that is tender toward all varieties of Friends. Every page reflects not just wide study\, but also deep experience and clear wisdom.”  — Tom Hamm\, historian and author of The Quakers in America

SUMMARY:Book Talk with CPFM & Eco-Justice: Open Reality by Shodo Spring
DESCRIPTION:YOU’RE INVITED:\nBook talk with Author\, Shodo Spring\nOpen Reality: Meeting the Polycrisis Together with All Beings\n\nWed. October 29\, 2025\n 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM \nThe Rufus Jones Room at Friends Center | 1501 Cherry St. Philadelphia\, PA\n\n \nCo-hosted by Central Philadelphia Friends Meeting (CPFM) and the Eco-Justice Collaborative of PYM. It will be hybrid (link to join below) and refreshments will be offered. \n\nOpen Reality speaks to the world behind and beneath our daily collective trauma. It opens practical possibilities for creating a shared\, flexible culture that knows the natural world both as family and as a working partner. It invites the reader to a world of possibility. What if industrial civilization isn’t the best that humans can do? What if we weren’t alone in the world\, but embedded in a universe of conscious\, intentional\, powerful beings? \nOpen Reality: Meeting the Polycrisis Together With All Beings \nOnly modern humans have imagined ourselves as gods… \nAnd come to the edge of destroying life on earth. \n\n“Shodo Spring has belonged to the natural world for as long as she can remember. She grew up running half-wild in the fields and woods of northeastern Ohio\, with early mornings on the shore of Lake Erie and long days outdoors alone in the woods and creeks. Civilized human society was more difficult. She studied physics hoping to understand the universe\, then psychotherapy to understand humans\, then Buddhism to free herself – all while voraciously reading in history\, anthropology\, archaeology\, political science\, philosophy\, and spirituality. She joined a series of political movements\, finally focused on environment and environmental justice\, what would be called deep ecology.” \n– From her bio at the Mountains and Waters Alliance Website \n  \nZoom Information \nTo join by Zoom\, CLICK HERE. Or go to https://bit.ly/3ZxkkuF\nMeeting ID:  550 104 323  — Password:  cpmm\nFor the full URL (web address) and dial-in numbers\, click here.

SUMMARY:Climate Witness: Let Our Actions Speak! Thread Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Climate Witness: Let Our Actions Speak! Thread Gathering\nSaturday\, October 25\, 2025 | 9:00am – 4:00pm\nat Arch Street Meeting House and Zoom \nRegister Here\nFriends are invited to join for a day of sharing\, learning\, and taking action together on the topic of climate witness. In the morning\, we will hear a narrative from five Quaker bodies focused on climate action and their perspective on what we can do to help our earth: \n\nQAMAR (Quaker Action in the Mid-Atlantic Region) – Policy and Lobbying at State levels\nEQAT (Earth Quaker Action Team) -  Direct Action – Finance\nCWS (Climate Witness Stewards) – PYM-wide action\nEJC (Eco-Justice Collaborative (of PYM)) -  Action/Education\nQEW (Quaker Earthcare Witness) – National\n\nAfter the morning program\, participants will have a chance to participate in workshops aimed at providing resources\, building your knowledge and your toolkit for action. All adult workshops are hybrid\, so you can join in person or from home. You’ll get to pick two of the choices listed below! \nWorkshops\n\nWhat is Happening and What is Possible? \n\nEco-Justice Collaborative and the Climate Witness Stewards are tracking the climate work in Monthly Meetings.  There is an awesome mosaic of work\, each piece different\, beautiful and necessary. EJC and CWS will show how the Friendly Household Initiative and the PYM Climate Playbook can help each meeting create its own mosaic and move it into the wider community.\n\n\nDecarbonize Your Meetinghouse\n\n Wondering how you can lower your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint? In this workshop you’ll learn how to benchmark your building\, reduce energy usage and carbon and save money in the process!  Experts will provide practical guidance on the steps to improve your building and take advantage of federal and utility incentives to save money.\n\n\nSpiritual Climate Witness: Embracing Discernment and Collective Action\n\nOur Quaker practices can guide us in our work on behalf of the earth and each other. Drawing on stories of nonviolent direct action from the Earth Quaker Action Team and campaigns for economic democracy and more\, this workshop will explore how discernment can help us act strategically to remove the pillars of power supporting climate destruction. A mixture of frameworks\, personal reflection and playful practice will guide this experiential workshop supporting participants to find their next bold step.\n\n\nClean Energy Policy Throwdown\n\nWith the Trump administration reducing federal investment in clean energy\, the center of climate action has shifted to state and local levels. Join Liz Robinson and Steve Loughin from Quaker Action Mid-Atlantic Region (QAMAR) to learn what’s happening across the PYM region and how you can help these efforts succeed.\n\n\nQuaker Earthcare Witness Mapping Project \n\nWe’re not alone! Quakers all over the world are taking action on care for our earth. In this workshop\, QEW will share inspiring stories\, resources and even grant opportunities. There’s strength in numbers\, so let’s get our meetings on the map!\n\n\nYouth Programming (in person only)\n\nClimate concern touches Friends of all ages. SUMMARY:Walking Through Time: Lessons from Pendle Hill’s Landscape: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Lloyd Guindon\, Pendle Hill’s Director of Facilities and Grounds\, and Jennifer Walker\, horticultural designer\, arborist\, and educator\, for a walk through the campus landscape—past and present. \nUsing historic maps and firsthand observation\, we’ll explore how the land has changed over time: what was planted with good intentions that we now recognize as invasive\, which trees have stood for a century or more\, and how our current decisions reflect new understandings of ecology\, climate resilience\, and care for community and habitat. We’ll discuss current efforts to reduce tree impacts on buildings while increasing wildlife habitat\, and invite participants to consider how the long view of a place can guide wise stewardship today.

SUMMARY:In The Light of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Come take part in an evening of hands-on art\, history\, and community engagement on Saturday\, October 18\, 2025\, at Byberry Friends Meeting. In the Light of Freedom will feature two back-to-back programs with Philadelphia-based walking artist and Underground Railroad researcher Ken Johnston\, honoring Byberry’s role in the Underground Railroad and movement to abolish slavery. \nThe evening begins with a Lantern-Making Workshop from 5:00–6:30pm\, where participants can assemble and decorate their own LED lanterns for the parade to follow. Johnston will share stories of Byberry anti-slavery leader Robert Purvis and the symbolic role of lanterns in guiding freedom seekers. Space is limited to 25 participants and advance registration is required. There is a nominal $5 materials fee for the workshop. \nAt 6:30pm\, a Historical Reenactment and Lantern Parade will commemorate the 175th anniversary—to the day—of a historic October 18\, 1850\, meeting in Byberry Hall\, led by Robert Purvis and other abolitionist leaders\, to protest the newly enacted Fugitive Slave Act. Event participants will be invited to take on the roles of the original signers of a declaration against the Act that the attendees adopted at the 1850 meeting before joining Johnston for a lantern light procession around the Byberry Meeting burial grounds\, marking the resting places of local anti-slavery activists and sharing Underground Railroad stories. \n“Lanterns are more than light—they’re a way to connect with history\, community\, and the courage of those who fought for freedom\,” said Jack McCarthy\, Project Director. \n“Today one could say Robert Purvis and his brothers grew up grounded with a sense of cultural competence and social activism\,” said Ken Johnston. So it is befitting we commemorate the 175th anniversary of a historic 1850 protest meeting led by Robert Purvis and others against the Fugitive Slave Act.” \nGuests may bring their own handheld lights or lanterns—if it glows\, it goes!

SUMMARY:Christ and Creation: Illuminate Bible Study with Woodbrooke and Barclay Press
DESCRIPTION:An explorative Bible study\, building on the “Christ in Creation” Illuminate publication. This session brings together Woodbrooke and Pendle Hill in an extended conversation about Scripture\, nature\, and environmental witness. \nThis session is an opportunity for the Illuminate authors to share what led them to write\, and what inspired them most about the theme of ‘creation’. The session will be centered around several strands:  \n\nThe Wisdom tradition of Proverbs \n\n\nThe creation theology of Romans \n\n\nThe restorative vision of Isaiah \n\n\nThe raw challenge of Revelation. \n\nParticipants will have the chance to explore some Biblical images and texts in small groups\, as well as engage with the authors. This event will particularly appeal to Friends who want to go deeper and their understanding of the Bible\, and those who wish to ground their climate activism in a rich soil of spiritual insight.
