SUMMARY:Kairos: A Spiritual Journey
DESCRIPTION:A spiritual retreat based on the monastic practice of worshiping\, working\, and studying while experiencing solitude and community living. \nWhat spiritual practices sustain you?\nWhat does prayer/contemplation mean in your life? \nHow do you support yourself and others during challenging times? \nAre you creating space for spiritual learning? \nHow does your spiritual practice permeate your way of being in the world?    \nThe term kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word describing an opportune and decisive moment; a combination of time and place that generates the ideal environment for actions\, words\, and/or movements.    \nThis retreat is designed to nurture the Effetá in our life – the movement of being attentive to the Spirit in our challenging world. Participants will have an opportunity to reconnect with one another as we explore and nurture our experience of being in relationship with the Divine.  In this space\, we will be invited to contemplate and reflect on how my/our openness to the Spirit is manifested in my/our presence in the world.   \nWe will explore practice and queries that will support participants in their spiritual journey as we individually and collectively build in the importance of hope and love in time of adversity. Participants will create a unique space for spiritual growth by combining key practices from Quaker and other faith traditions\, and they will have the opportunity to engage in contemplative praying of the Scriptures as they experience the deep practice of worship sharing.

DESCRIPTION:When Friends come together\, great things happen.\n\nPhiladelphia Yearly Meeting is launching a new program called the Friends Experiment. During virtual gatherings spread across June\, Friends will come together to discuss topics important to their meetings and share their challenges and successes\, with the goal of learning from each other and collectively building a thriving yearly meeting. \nAfter completing each “experiment\,” we hope to learn and share the best ways Friends are addressing these topics with the wider body and potentially organize more gatherings like these in the future! \nThese gatherings are free and open to all PYM Friends\, so please consider registering for any or all of the dates and topics below. \n\nChildren’s Religious Education – June 14\, 2026 @ 7 pm\n\nJoin Friends from across the yearly meeting and PYM’s Youth Engagement Coordinator\, Kristin Simmons\, for a conversation about children’s religious education and ways to create intergenerational and family-friendly meetings. We will share suggestions for curricula and programming\, and brainstorm ways to engage youth and families in new ways. In addition\, we will consider ways to collaborate at the quarter and yearly meeting levels.   \nAll are welcome – parents\, First Day School teachers\, and anyone who is interested in sharing ideas about children’s religious education! \n\nFinance & Property – June 15\, 2026 @ 5:30 pm\nPastoral Care – June 17\, 2026 @ 1:00 pm\nSpiritual Action – June 22\, 2026 @ 5:30 pm\nAdult Religious Education – June 18\, 2026 @ 5:30 pm\nEvent Planning and Event Promotion – June 25\, 2026 @ 5:30 pm\n\nThere are so many roles we can play as members one of another\, so we hope that you will learn and grow alongside PYM Friends into a role that empowers you to lift up and support your faith community. \nPlease contact PYM at communications@pym.org with any questions. \n\n \n Register!

SUMMARY:The Psalms and the Beatitudes: A Jewish-Christian Quaker Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:An interfaith gathering and dinner exploring Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Psalms and the Beatitudes.  \nJesus of Nazareth has often been called by Christian scholars like Amy Jill Levine\, the world‘s “most misunderstood Jew.” When his teachings are viewed through Jewish and Quaker lenses\, his very Jewish teachings can emerge as powerful inspiration for both of our communities. \nJoin Rabbi Marcia Prager and Quaker educator Rebecca Mays as they invite you into their multi-decade adventure in Jewish-Christian Quaker dialogue. Our focus in this Sunday afternoon gathering\, which culminates in a sumptuous shared vegetarian dinner\, will be the section from Jesus‘s teachings called the Beatitudes in the gospel of Matthew and Luke.    \nOur study and group sharing will uncover the Psalms Jesus and his Jewish audience would have easily recognized as the source and influence for his interpretation of what makes us truly fortunate.     \nJoin us to share fresh understandings of these texts\, bringing your own insights and perspectives.    \nCome prepared for new ideas and new friends with whom you may wish to continue these engaging conversations.

SUMMARY:Extended Meeting for Worship
DESCRIPTION:Extended worship is a period of sitting with and in the divine spirit. In the manner of Early Friends\, we gather for a prolonged period of silent reflection and inward searching\, usually remaining in waiting worship for ~3 hours\, with time at the conclusion for afterthoughts and sharing. \nWhat can you expect? \nWe will gather in silence\, with hearts and minds open and bent towards listening to that of God among and within us. Spoken ministry may arise from the silence\, though it is not uncommon for worship to remain silent for the duration of our time together. Messages should be a deepening of the silence we share. The purpose of silent worship is not to speak\, but to listen more clearly. To this end\, we hold the silence as ministry itself\, which has the capacity for transformation and transcendence. \nWho is extended worship for? \nAll those who wish to deepen their spiritual practice and relationship with Spirit. All those who wish for more inward reflection and connection to the divine within. Those seeking to expand their individual and communal spiritual lives.

SUMMARY:The Birds’ Eye View of the Pendle Hill Landscape
DESCRIPTION:A birding nature walk tour of the Pendle Hill arboretum.  \nJoin Jeffrey Gordon\, internationally acclaimed birding guide\, and Lloyd Guindon\, Director of Facilities and Grounds\, for a fun and engaging tour of the property with an eye to the sky and an ear to the trees. In early June\, bird breeding activity reaches a crescendo and we are likely to see and hear evidence of nesting from a number of species. How do Pendle Hill’s plants\, trees\, and overall ecosystem support a healthy and varied bird life? What can I do to improve the bird habitat in my own backyard and/or neighborhood and what other actions might I take to support local bird life? Finally\, why is it important to do so? How can an enhanced awareness of birds improve our lives and in turn the lives of birds?

SUMMARY:This Monstrous Law! Robert and Harriet Purvis and the Fugitive Slave Act
DESCRIPTION:he Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and Millicent Sparks Productions invite the public to witness a performance that portrays three legendary Philadelphians from the city’s rich 19th-century Black history.   \nThis Monstrous Law! Robert and Harriet Purvis and the Fugitive Slave Act is a recreation of a historic protest of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law\, which compelled everyday citizens to assist in capturing enslaved people seeking their freedom. Living history performers portray abolitionists Robert Purvis and Harriet Forten Purvis\, who boldly responded to the inhumane law by rallying local citizens to defy it. A portrayal of celebrated concert singer Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield\, “The Black Swan\,” lends melodic power to the production.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 31 at 2 pm\, Emily Provance (“Quaker Emily”) will visit Barnegat Friends Meeting in person and give a presentation on communities and violence\, particularly political violence\, in an increasingly fractured society. \nYou are invited to join Emily Provance at Barnegat Friends Meeting\, 614 East Bay Avenue\, Barnegat\, NJ\, USA. If you cannot come to Barnegat\, please participate via Zoom. Either way\, we ask you to register here: https://barnegatquakers.tiny.us/QuakerEmily. \nCurrently Emily Provance is in Northern Ireland\, where she is looking at the history of the Troubles and how that is parallel (and not) to current conditions in the United States. Emily brought to Barnegat Meeting’s attention a recent FIRE survey that found 34% of college students now say it is sometimes acceptable to respond to objectionable speech with violence. That’s a scary trend regardless of where we stand politically. Her Barnegat presentation will pull from Quaker experience and Quaker theology to talk about how we respond to an increasingly fractured society. \nYou may be familiar with Emily Provance’s extensive work as a traveling Quaker minister. She has led numerous workshops and has given presentations for organizations worldwide. Her recent publications include the Pendle Hill pamphlet\, “Spiritual Gifts\, the Beloved Community\, and Covenant” and the book\, “Before the Resurrection\, Transitions and Endings in Quaker Meetings and Churches”. In 2025 she was Britain Yearly Meeting’s invited speaker at the Swarthmore Lecture organized by Woodbrooke. Her topic was “A Testimony of Community”. You can learn more at Emily’s blog\, “Turning\, Turning\, Holy Experiments Among Friends”. \nQuestions? Call or text Barnegat Friends Meeting at 609-698-2058 or write to events@barnegatquakers.org.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion – A Tender Time: Quaker Voices on the End of Life
DESCRIPTION:Are you thinking about your own aging or accompanying a family member\, friend or meeting member as they journey through aging to dying?  Are you wondering what Friends have to say about these stages? \nWe will explore one chapter at each session. You can attend all 6 or just the ones that speak to you.  Sessions will be on Zoom to be more accessible.  The first chapter is Completing Your Life: Spirit-led Aging. \n“From the Baltimore Yearly Meeting’s End of Life Working Group\, A Tender Time is a unique collection of Quaker voices\, historical and contemporary\, that explores practical\, emotional\, and spiritual aspects of aging and dying well. It moves in widening circles\, from aging to dying\, and from primary caregiver to friends to the whole faith community. It illustrates how individual Friends make end of life decisions guided by the Spirit and Quaker values.” (Pendle Hill Bookstore description) \nLearn more at: https://www.quakersbucks.org/events/book-discussion-a-tender-time-quaker-voices-on-the-end-of-life
