SUMMARY:Reclaiming Rest: Nourishing Practices to Renew and Restore Body\, Mind\, and Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Spring Term @ Pendle Hill\n\nReclaiming Rest: Nourishing Practices to Renew and Restore Body\, Mind\, and Spirit\nMarch 1 @ 12:00 pm – March 8 @ 1:00 pm EST \nWallingford\, PA\, just outside Philadelphia\, PA \nOn Campus \n“Over the margins of life comes a whisper\, a faint call\, a premonition of richer living which we know we are passing by. Strained by the very mad pace of our daily outer burdens\, we are further strained by an inward uneasiness\, because we have hints that there is a way of life vastly richer and deeper than all this hurried existence\, a life of unhurried serenity and peace and power.” \n— Thomas R. Kelly\, 1941 Quaker educator and mystic \nMany of us believe that we have to earn rest and renewal and that overwork is the norm. Frazzled and stressed by the pull of too many demands of work\, family\, children\, aging relatives\, and our own needs\, we succumb to individual pressures that foster a collective culture of burnout and toxic productivity. Offering approaches from the Plum Village tradition and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh\, Quaker activist and educator\, Parker Palmer\, and the Center for Courage & Renewal\, Valerie will invite participants to explore the connection between radiant rest\, peacemaking\, social justice\, and societal transformation to live in greater groundedness and alignment with your deepest values. \nWhat You Will Learn: \n\nCo-Connection between rest\, renewal\, and productivity\nUnderstand  the science of stress and burnout\n Learn when productivity turns to toxic burnout\nExplore rest and peacemaking\nUnderstand connection between rest and social justice\, social action\nEngage mindful rest\, constructive rest\, and yoga nidra\n\nTentative Class Format \n\nCentering Moment\nContent Delivery\nIndividual\, small\, and large group reflection and discussion\nMindful rest\, constructive rest and/or yoga nidra

SUMMARY:Why Palestine Matters Course | 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join Philadelphia Yearly Meeting’s Middle East Collaborative for a six week course developed by the Israel Palestine Mission Network of the  Presbyterian Church (USA).   \nGain perspectives and histories to put news headlines in greater context\, discover where to learn more\, and advocate for justice. \nSix Thursdays from 7:00-8:30pm Eastern time \nFeb. 12\, 19\, 26 \nMarch 12\, 19\, 26 via Zoom \nLearn why Palestine matters (for info on book). Scroll down to download the book. Questions? – contact Sandy Rea drsandyrea@hotmail.com Please put WPM in subject line. \n \n \n \n \n \n Please register to receive the Zoom information and weekly reflections and readings from the organizers. \n \n Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe purpose of propaganda is to make one set of people forget that other sets of \npeople are human.                   \n– Aldous Huxley \n\nThe Palestine/Israeli relationship can often appear to be so complex and intractable that we don’t know how we can ever understand enough to work on justice. News coverage often comes without the entire context\, so we can end up losing our ability to honor the humanity of all involved. When we stop seeing a person or group as human\, we much more easily discount and discredit their experiences and humanity\, making it much more easy to deny their needs and right to exist. \nThere are many things to consider: I think about the ways US taxes fund the conflict. It’s challenging to follow accurate ins and outs of Israeli politics\, to follow Palestinian politics in the West Bank and Gaza. The need to sift through: Is it or is it not occupation? Is it\, or is it not\, apartheid? Is it \, or is it not\, antisemitism?  These questions deflect us from the basic simplicity of the situation- a long history of injustice. \nWhen I look at this through my Quaker lens\, through what I value – that there is divinity in each person\, the cornerstone for our testimony of equality\, the cornerstone for our peace testimony – I know that everyone deserves systems that center justice. So how can I stand aside when systems of injustice limit the existence of a people? What can we do to help remove the occasion for war? The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza war is over 70\,000. Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank increased under cover of the war; and the war spread to neighboring countries. \nTo advocate for justice\, it helps to understand more deeply the connections these two peoples have to the land\, to understand a fuller history of the middle east than we get from the news stories\, and what we have been taught\, often predominantly framed by western assumptions\, to learn there are multiple definitions of antisemitism\, the origins of Zionism\, and the realities of apartheid in the region. \nWhy Palestine Matters is a collection of personal stories\, history\, data\, experience\, and the thinking of a variety of people with the experience of the area and the knowledge of history with a Middle East lens. It is a curriculum that provides context for the challenges of Palestinian lives that have continued to be upended since the 1930s. It adds to our ability to address justice for Palestinians and safety for Israel. The curriculum helps uncover the history of the land that has not been shared broadly. \nMembers of the Middle East Collaborative work with allies from other organizations to present the 6 session course of Why Palestine Matters beginning February 12.  See the PYM calendar to register. The Middle East Collaborative looks forward to growing in understanding and advocacy together with you. \n \n Download PDF: Why Palestine Matters Book

SUMMARY:"Black Resistance to Quaker Enslavers in Colonial Pennsylvania" by Jim Fussell
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 10th at 7:00PM on Zoom \nPresentation by Jim Fussell\, Scholar in Residence at Pendle Hill Quaker Center\, Wallingford\, PA \nIn a time when historical exhibits about slavery are being altered and dismantled\, Jim Fussell\, spring 2026 scholar in residence at Pendle Hill\, will highlight how enslaved Black people in Pennsylvania challenged colonial-era Quaker enslavers through escape\, arson\, confrontation\, and self-advocacy. Their actions\, spanning 1725 to 1781\, reshaped Quaker and Pennsylvania history from the ground up. \nCentering Stenton as a site of lived struggle\, the presentation invites participants to reconsider familiar narratives about Quakers. Close readings of runaway notices\, court records\, and other documents reveal the persistent acts of Black agency and resistance. \nThis program is part of Stenton’s Wrestling With Justice: Quakers and Northern Slavery Project\, supported by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. \nTickets are available at this link.

SUMMARY:What Would Lucretia Mott Say?
DESCRIPTION:A Living History Event at Bristol Friends Meeting | Sunday\, February 8 @ 2 PM\nAs the United States marks 250 years since its founding\, Bristol Friends Meeting invites the community to reflect on the moral voices that helped shape the nation. One such voice belongs to Lucretia Mott—Quaker minister\, abolitionist\, women’s rights pioneer\, and steadfast advocate for peace and equality. What Would Lucretia Mott Say? We will find out. \nOn Sunday\, February 8\, at 2:00 p.m.\, Kim Hanley\, a historical reenactor portraying Lucretia Mott through the American Historical Theatre\, will bring her words\, convictions\, and Quaker faith to life at Bristol Friends Meeting\, 235 Market Street\, Bristol. Through story and dialogue\, audiences will encounter Mott’s courageous witness on slavery\, women’s rights\, and the Quaker belief in the Inner Light present in every person. \nThis free program offers a timely opportunity to engage with Quaker history and consider how Mott’s legacy speaks to the challenges and hopes of our own time\, especially as we reflect on 250 years of the American experiment.

SUMMARY:An International Gathering of Young Adult Friends at Jordans Meetinghouse\, UK
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share news about an upcoming international gathering of Young Adult Quakers (ages 18 to 35) from the 13th to the 17th of August\, as we seek a deepening of our faith. We will gather at the Jordans Meeting House & Quaker Centre in Beaconsfield\, UK. \nIn the midst of a hostile world and a future filled with uncertainty\, we find the need for a faith that can nourish us. We hope Friends will join us for some days together\, as we seek depth and richness\, helping each other to find \nA faith that sustains\, A faith that gives life\, A Spirit that guides. \nThe gathering will be grounded in worship\, giving ample space to listen to the promptings of Love and Truth in our hearts. We welcome participants bringing their whole selves\, our commonalities and our differences\, as well as gifts. Everyone is encouraged to use the language that speaks their own spiritual truth. Let us collectively choose to live in the Light\, and explore where that choice leads us. We extend the welcome to bring our whole lives into the Spirit\, and grapple with the question: what does Love require of us? How are we led by the Spirit? How can we courageously engage with the world\, ourselves\, and each other? How can we help each other go down to the Well of Living Water\, and to drink from it? \nThis gathering follows one from last year which was also held at Jordans Meeting House\, the epistle for which can be read here. Similar to last year\, we hope to offer this gathering nearly free of charge. We ask for a £10 ($12) contribution that will go towards food costs. To register\, Friends can fill out the registration form here.

SUMMARY:Birds\, Crafts\, Fun\, Oh My! Crafts & Birds at Stenton House (FREE!)
DESCRIPTION:Want to explore our Quaker history up close and personal? Want to explore the beautiful grounds and majestic birds on the lush green lawns of Stenton House? Do you want to learn more about the legacy and historic impact of Dinah\, whom Quaker James Logan had enslaved and then manumitted in 1776\, the year of this nation’s founding? \nJoin us on June 14 for a family-friendly gathering of bird watching\, crafts\, and general rest and relaxation. Bird watching will be from 8:00-10:00 am\, and crafts and general house tours will be from 12:00-4:00 pm. This is a FREE Event! \nDid you know that the Logan Family was a part of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting? James Logan was the first secretary to William Penn\, and he and his family resided for generations at Stenton House in the Historic Germantown area of Philadelphia. While many Quakers are known for their abolitionist work\, the Logan family staunchly resisted the urgings of Friends to end their practice of enslavement. Now\, Stenton House\, through an incredible opportunity from the Pew Center for Arts and & Heritage\, has begun working on programs to better understand our Quaker legacy of Justice and the practice of Friends in Enslavement and Abolition Work in the Northern U.S. \nFriends of all ages are encouraged to gather at Stenton House (4601 N 18th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19140) on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025. We will have time to bird watch\, do some crafts\, tour Stenton House\, sit near the Dinah Memorial\, and overall have time to rest and relax with each other. \nIn Color Birding Club will provide binoculars to Friends that would like to bird watch. \nRegister below! \n\n\n \n \n Registration Form\n \n \n Full Name (First & Last)(Required)Email Address(Required)Phone Number(Required)Please note if you will be coming with additional friends or family members.I will be attending:(Required)\n \n Birdwatching\, 8-10 am\n \n \n Crafts & Chill Time\, 12-4 pm\n How will you get to Stenton House? SUMMARY:CANCELED-Young Adult Friends (Ages 18-35) Online Worship Sharing
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENING’S WORSHIP SHARING HAS BEEN CANCELED. THE YAF ONLINE WORSHIP SHARING SERIES IS ON PAUSE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING! \nCalling young adult F/friends and Seekers (ages 18-35) throughout the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to join us for our monthly online worship sharing series the first Wednesday of every month\, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. ET.  \nRegister online to receive the Zoom link!\nThis is a chance for us to be in community together\, meet young adult F/friends and seekers that we are perhaps not always able to see because of distance\, and to deepen our relationship to worship and discernment. Please note\, we will be using the Worship Sharing guidelines resource document from Friends General Conference to ground our worship sharing together. This includes the following norms and expectations: \n\nReach as deeply as you can into the sacred center of your life.\nSpeak out of the silence\, and leave a period of silence between speakers.\nSpeak from your own experience\, about your own experience. Concentrate on\nfeelings and changes rather than on thoughts or theories.\nDo not respond to what anyone else has said\, either to praise or to refute.\nListen carefully and deeply to what is spoken.\nExpect to speak only once\, until everyone has had a chance to speak.\nRespect the confidentiality of what is shared.
