SUMMARY:"Black Resistance to Quaker Enslavers in Colonial Pennsylvania" by Jim Fussell
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 10th at 7:00PM on Zoom \nPresentation by Jim Fussell\, Scholar in Residence at Pendle Hill Quaker Center\, Wallingford\, PA \nIn a time when historical exhibits about slavery are being altered and dismantled\, Jim Fussell\, spring 2026 scholar in residence at Pendle Hill\, will highlight how enslaved Black people in Pennsylvania challenged colonial-era Quaker enslavers through escape\, arson\, confrontation\, and self-advocacy. Their actions\, spanning 1725 to 1781\, reshaped Quaker and Pennsylvania history from the ground up. \nCentering Stenton as a site of lived struggle\, the presentation invites participants to reconsider familiar narratives about Quakers. Close readings of runaway notices\, court records\, and other documents reveal the persistent acts of Black agency and resistance. \nThis program is part of Stenton’s Wrestling With Justice: Quakers and Northern Slavery Project\, supported by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. \nTickets are available at this link.

SUMMARY:What Would Lucretia Mott Say?
DESCRIPTION:A Living History Event at Bristol Friends Meeting | Sunday\, February 8 @ 2 PM\nAs the United States marks 250 years since its founding\, Bristol Friends Meeting invites the community to reflect on the moral voices that helped shape the nation. One such voice belongs to Lucretia Mott—Quaker minister\, abolitionist\, women’s rights pioneer\, and steadfast advocate for peace and equality. What Would Lucretia Mott Say? We will find out. \nOn Sunday\, February 8\, at 2:00 p.m.\, Kim Hanley\, a historical reenactor portraying Lucretia Mott through the American Historical Theatre\, will bring her words\, convictions\, and Quaker faith to life at Bristol Friends Meeting\, 235 Market Street\, Bristol. Through story and dialogue\, audiences will encounter Mott’s courageous witness on slavery\, women’s rights\, and the Quaker belief in the Inner Light present in every person. \nThis free program offers a timely opportunity to engage with Quaker history and consider how Mott’s legacy speaks to the challenges and hopes of our own time\, especially as we reflect on 250 years of the American experiment.

SUMMARY:“Experiment with Light”
DESCRIPTION:This is a three-session online series introducing early Quaker contemplative practices for spiritual growth. It is hosted by Pendle Hill and led by Shulamith Clearbridge of Swarthmore Meeting. \nThe “Experiment with Light” is a practice of opening to new possibilities by exploring what it means to “wait in the Light” as early Quakers did.  Quaker scholar Rex Ambler put together a prompted meditation based on his studies of early Quaker worship. There are now “Light groups” meeting on a regular basis all over the world.  \nAfter the light illuminates a situation or aspect of ourselves\, accepting what is shown to us brings eventual transformation of our hearts and our lives. We become more peaceful\, joyful\, compassionate\, and loving.    \nIn this series\, we will do the meditation\, contemplate the messages we receive\, reflect through ways such as journaling or drawing\, and share together in community. Through our three weeks together\, we will become a community of support\, sustenance\, and growth.

SUMMARY:What is Quaker Process?
DESCRIPTION:Join the Barnegat (NJ\, USA) Friends by Zoom on Thursday\, October 30\, 2025 at 7 pm Eastern US time. \nRegister here:  barnegatquakers.tiny.us/QuakerProcess \nAuthor Mathilda Navias will share an in-depth understanding of Quaker processes and insights into living in the Spirit. \nQuaker process is much more than what goes on during business meeting. It encompasses how we interact with one another. It includes how the different pieces of our local meetings interact. It includes how we deal with leadings\, concerns\, and discernment\, both as individuals and as corporate bodies. Good Quaker process helps us unite and build community. \nIn earlier times\, Quaker culture and processes were learned by children and new attenders by observation\, osmosis\, and mentoring. Today newcomers are welcomed warmly but may feel a little lost when practices and jargon are not explained or when conscious guidance is not offered. \nIn her book\, Quaker Process for Friends on the Benches\, author Mathilda Navias fills many gaps by documenting processes about which little has been written. Her book encompasses worldwide practices across Quaker branches and traditions. The book helps Friends find and use processes that work well\, that bring everyone into unity and loving concern for one another\, and that resonate with the greater truths\, where ensuing actions are undergirded by the power of the Spirit. \nUnderstanding Quakerism is of value to anyone who cares about the world in which we live. Quaker practices offer a way of living a life of deep connection\, a life in harmony with one’s internal spirit and with others. \n“Mathilda Navias has written a remarkable book that is tender toward all varieties of Friends. Every page reflects not just wide study\, but also deep experience and clear wisdom.”  — Tom Hamm\, historian and author of The Quakers in America

SUMMARY:The Drinker Family & Genealogy With the Historical Society of Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The Drinker Family & Genealogy With the Historical Society of Pennsylvania \nJune 26th\, 5:30 to 7 pm\nat Arch Street Meeting House\,\nFREE \nhttps://www.historicasmh.org/events-at-asmh/2025/6/26 \nElizabeth & Henry Drinker were affluent Philadelphia Quakers who worshipped at Arch Street Meeting House upon its construction in 1804. Revolutionary figures of their time\, Henry was among those imprisoned in Virginia by Patriots in 1777 for refusing to pledge loyalty to Pennsylvania\, and Elizabeth’s diaries spanning from 1758 to 1807 are considered the most detailed account of colonial life. \nSean Connolly\, Executive Director of Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust\, will begin the evening by exploring the Drinker’s connection to Arch Street Meeting House and their impact on the Quaker City. \nUsing Drinker and Quaker records as examples\, Christopher Damiani\, Access Services Librarian at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, will then discuss using the genealogical collections at HSP to help find your ancestors. \nGoing on a genealogical journey is an exciting one. Through twists and turns\, breakthroughs and roadblocks\, it connects us with our past in many ways. Whether you’re just beginning your adventure or are a well-traveled veteran\, the resources at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania can help you on your way. \nGUEST SPEAKER \nChristopher Damiani has worked at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for thirteen years\, in various capacities. He currently works as an Access Services Librarian\, whose duties include assisting library visitors\, as well as performing historical and genealogical research. He previously worked at Fort Mifflin on the Delaware as an Educator and Tour Guide. Chris received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees of American History from West Chester University. \nARCH STREET MEETING HOUSE PRESERVATION TRUST \nLocated in the heart of Old City\, Philadelphia\, Arch Street Meeting House is a museum\, National Historic Landmark\, and active Quaker place of worship that welcomes nearly 60\,000 visitors annually. Constructed in 1804 on two acres of land deeded by William Penn as a burial ground for the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)\, Arch Street Meeting House has had an estimated 20\,000 burials occur on its historic grounds. \nArch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust preserves\, operates\, and interprets the meeting house and grounds which will serve to increase public understanding of the impact and continued relevance of Quakers and Quaker history.

SUMMARY:Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County
DESCRIPTION:Pat Mervine\, local author\, historian and member of Middletown Friends Meeting will speak at the Plumstead Friends Meetinghouse\, 4914A Point Pleasant Pike\, Doylestown\, PA on Saturday\, June 14th at 4:00 pm about her newly published book\, Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County. \nCo-written with Joseph Coleman\, Slavery\, Friends\, and Freedom in Bucks County explores the African American journey in Southeastern Pennsylvania from the 1600s through the post-Civil War era. Stories of fifty freedom seekers\, abolitionists\, and participants in the Underground Railroad are told within the historical context in which they lived. The book includes tales of extraordinary courage\, of daring escapes from slavery\, kidnapping\, and significant African American settlements which have long since disappeared. \nPat will relate stories about Quakers who fought for abolition and the people of both races who provided support for those on the run and will talk about the laws that protected the enslaved\, then stripped free people of their rights. She will also share stories specifically related to the Plumstead-Doylestown region. \nAll of this and more make up the history of Bucks County\, the ripple effects of which are still felt today. After Pat shares some of these stories she will provide an update on the construction of the African American Museum of Bucks County. \nPat’s book was written as a fundraiser\, with 100% of proceeds from its sale going to the AAMBC Capital Campaign. This event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Quaker Walk 2025
DESCRIPTION:Quakers from Brooklyn and Queens are partnering with faith\, interfaith\, and other groups to organize a 265 mile solidarity walk from Flushing\, Queens to Washington\, DC. In a time where our democracy and first amendment freedoms are under attack\, the goal is to invite faith communities and concerned neighbors across the country to stand in unity with all individuals who are being unfairly and unconstitutionally targeted by this administration as well as send a message about our shared humanity. The three week walk will be punctuated by events and demonstrations building energy and momentum towards the arrival in Washington D.C. as well as motivating communities to stand up for our basic freedoms. When the walkers arrive in D.C.\, they will deliver a historical petition called the Flushing Remonstrance and a series of demands to members of congress.
