Thompson Vail Palmer photos of the

1920-1921 Young Friends Movement

This is a web album containing pictures of 2 sequences in a photo album assembled by my grandfather, Thompson Vail Palmer, a lifelong member of Concord Meeting in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. They are of a (presumably PYM) "Young Friends Movement" camping retreat, named "Onas," in two different locations in the summers of 1920 and 1921. This has made me curious about whether the name Onas for this moveable YF camp predates the current summer camp Onas and was perhaps the genesis for it--but I know nothing about the history of Camp Onas. Anyway, as you had posted pictures of past eras of YFs on the YF website, I thought you might be interested.

Inserted into the album there was also a sheet of typed paper of  "Young Friends Movement" Songs. I retyped them and attached the here. These, too, seem to indicate that the Young Friends Movement called its summer camping gathering "Onas," wherever it happened to be held.

I am especially amused to see from the songs that they seemed to call themselves "Yoofs" or "Yoofems." Think that will catch on again? I'll see if I can get Jeff to reintroduce it, ha.- Cindy Palmer   1/13/2009

YOUNG FRIENDS MOVEMENT

CHEER

Oatmeal, corn flakes, chip beef, bread; who can say we’re not well fed;
Yell, oh Yell, for Y. F. M Of all camps ours is the gem.
Rah, rah, rah - - - Rah, rah rah; Y O O F - - - - - - em.

SONGS

When the cry of “Camp” goes ringing thru the ranks of the Young Friends Movement,
There are shouts of joy, from every girl and boy, And a big smile on each face.
Soon we’ll all gather round the old campfire, Where our thoughts have been for long,
Then we’ll should “Hurray, we’ve come to stay, Let us sing this song.”

Chorus.
Hurray! For our Camp Onas, Hurray! The life’s begun,
Back from our work, cares and troubles, Back with the Yoofems and fun.
Back to our dear old campfire, long may it burn for us.
Don’t let us sing of our troubles and cares, Just sing of Camp Onas.

Tune: Gypsy Trail

We pick our path ‘tween rock and rock, We follow the swiftest eddy,
And the paddle’s call, it will find us all, Ever and ever ready.
Ready to part the morning mist; Ready in midday sun;
Happy to glide in still eventide, As home to our camp we come.

Follow Camp Onas where’er it go, Come where the silence whirls - -
By a hidden rill ‘neath a dusky hill, The hush of the stars unfurls.
Follow Camp Onas where’er it go, Walking the woods with fun;
For after it ends we will be fast friends, And here we will all be one.

We hasten down that good brown path, We fly through the water blue,
And we’re held in sway till the death of day, By the charm of a green canoe.
The charm of our camp and the charm of our friends – But won’t it soon be thru.
Heart says to heart; Oh, wide may we part, but we’re all in the same canoe.
