City
Year is one of over 1,000 local and national AmeriCorps
programs across the country. AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace
Corps, engages Americans in |
| service to meet the
nation's critical need in areas of education, public safety,
the environment, and other human services. Since 1994, AmeriCorps
continues to offer opportunities across the nation for individuals
of all ages who want to devote a year to community service.
City Year is
a unique youth service organization that engages diverse teams
of 17 to 24 year-olds, or corps
members, in a year of full-time community service, civic engagement
and leadership development. Corps members serve full-time
for 10 months, receive a weekly stipend to facilitate their
volunteer service and, upon completion of 1,700 hours of service,
receive a post-service award to further their education. City
Year is often likened to the “domestic Peace
Corps,” and was one of the inspirations and models for AmeriCorps,
the federally funded National Service Network.

AmeriCorps
is a network of national service programs that engage
more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service
to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health,
and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more
than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations.
They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable |
housing, teach computer
skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs,
and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993,
AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community
Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve
America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million
Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. You
must be at least 17 years old, although some service opportunities
require you to be at least 18. For one of our programs, the
National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), members must be
between 18 and 24 years old, but for most there are no upper
age limits. http://americorps.org/

Pennsylvania
Conservation Corps (PCC) |
The Pennsylvania Conservation
Corps (PCC) is a statewide program that offers work
experience, job training and educational opportunities to
young people who complete conservation, recreation and historical
preservation projects on the state's public lands. PCC corps
members are between the ages of 18
and 25; they work in crews under the guidance of
skilled, adult crew leaders. More than 12,000 young people
have served since the program began in 1984. The Corps has
completed some 800 projects, including work in every Pennsylvania
county.
If you are an unemployed young adult, you could get work
experience, job training and educational opportunities by
serving as a PCC corps member.
If you have construction and supervisory experience, and
you enjoy working with youth, you might want to be a PCC
crew leader.
If you or your company is looking for dependable, entry-level
workers, you could hire PCC corps members, or serve as a
mentor. Finally, if your community has need of conservation,
recreation or historical preservation work, you could apply
for a PCC project grant.

Corps services and opportunities, please contact:

Most National Parks have a concessionaire
authorized by the National Park Service to serve the public in that National
Park. You may need to research this on the web for a particular
National Park that you are interested in. Try Goggle
and put in the National Park's name and "concessioner" or "lodging".
Look the page over for who the operator is or their employment link. Below
is a selection of National Park concessioners to make your search easier.
Good luck.
Here is the info source for Glacier
National Park in Montana where my son Brian spent two summers.
The opportunity to live and work in the heart of Glacier National Park
is more than a job, it is an awesome experience. You will spend
your summer living inside Glacier National Park at the foot of beautiful
mountain peaks, crystal clear mountain lakes, surrounded by lush forests
and an abundance of wildlife (some of which may want
to eat you). The pay is not great but the mountains and hiking
are wonderful. Minimum working age is 16 years old
for the State of Montana. You must be 18 years old to live on property.
Wait staff must be at least 19 years of age. As
a note, the Many Glacier Hotel is where Steven King wrote "The Shining"
and it was used for the exterior scenes in the movie.
