YF schedule

The tent at Residential Yearly Meeting

For Young Friends entering 9th grade (or age 14 by September 1st) through age 18.

When Philadelphia Yearly Meeting gathers at DeSales University this July for our residential gathering we can be a community in a way that is simply not possible when we meet in Philadelphia. At DeSales University, young and old mix at meals and in intergenerational sessions and workshops. In addition to worshipping and doing business together, we can all play together, enjoy one another's presence and get to know one another in a fuller and deeper way.

Young Friends will gather in much the same fashion that we do for one of our gatherings. We will be staying in a designated portion of one of the dormitories, with the support of Friendly Adult Presences and Cookie Caldwell, Young Friends Program Coordinator. We will join the community for many activities but will have our own floor in one of the residence halls. Those signing up for the Young Friends dorm are expected to take part in the scheduled Young Friends program. Young people may also choose to stay with their families and participate in the Young Friends program. Cookie Caldwell, Young Friends Program Coordinator

The Young Friends programs will focus on Immigration with a human face. We hope to have immigrants come share with Young Friends about their experiences coming to America and we will show the video "A Day without a Mexican" which will be fun as well as educational.

Highlights of the week include hiking to Glen Onoko Water Falls in the Lehigh Gorge, worship sharing, music and dancing, games, participating in the afternoon intergenerational Re-creation and workshops, and participating in Environmental service work with the Wildlands Conservancy (9:00 AM Friday). Tuesday night will feature Niyonu Spann and Tribe 1 who have performed throughout the country at peace & justice rallies, churches, schools and in Nicaragua. Niyonu loves “helping folks sing from their souls in ways they might have only thought possible in their dreams.” Wednesday evening, Peace & Concerns Standing Committee will share its epistle. We will hear the progress and continued challenges of our concerns for climate change. Friends Center will present updates on the “greening” of Friends Center.

Some of the Wednesday afternoon interest groups and workshops that you might be interested in include: Healing from the Trauma of War and Terrorism; Eldering and Discernment; Climate Change and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Witness; Responding to Global Climate Change: Friends Center Renovations; Transforming Ultimate Suffering into Healing Peacemaking: Lessons of the Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombing); Hope for Tomorrow: Quaker experiences in villages of India; Braiding the Native American and Quaker Paths; Act Locally: Resist Growing Militarism. Friday afternoon interest groups and workshops include: The special nature of Quaker Leadership: Let’s talk about it!; Circle Drumming: Community building; Friends Committee on National Legislation [FCNL] Network: Putting Faith into Practice. More workshops are in the works. Go to the Residential Yearly Meeting web pages for more current information. Friendly Adult Presences needed
for Young Friends @ Residential Yearly Meeting.

We need 2 male & 2 female Full-time Friendly Adult Presences to help make the "magic" happen! We want everyone coming to Young Friends @ Residential Yearly Meeting to feel safe, accepted, cared about and included in the group. Your challenge as a Friendly Adult Presence is to be both an "Adult Chaperone" and "Participant". You are asked to be a responsible Friendly adult who shares your faith journey. Someone who can play with the Young Friends, teach crafts, perhaps lead a workshop, lead games, lead singing, help organize skits or talent show night. Keep in mind that you are not expected to do everything and that you can choose to participate in the way that best suits you and your skills. Hiking in the Lehigh Gorge and on Friday we will doing Environmental service work with the Wildlands Conservancy.

A Friendly Adult Presence must be over age 21. Full-time FAPs (2 male & 2 female) will receive room & board in the Young Friends dorm. We are looking for people who model responsible, positive behavior and are able to "elder" Young Friends in a Friendly manner when they are behaving inappropriately. This covers the Young Friends guidelines: no illegal drugs, no alcohol, and no inappropriate sexual behavior. The more subjective admonitions to love and care for one another are equally important. Can you accept the challenge and joy of spending 5 days with Young Friends? If you are game, give me a call. For more information go to Volunteering as a Friendly Adult Presences (Chaperone)

This year we expect Young Friends will be housed in the brand new Welsh Hall Dormitory.

The dorm looks a lot like #45 Aviat Hall - Student Residence next door. Welsh hall is #50 at the top of the map

called "Residence Hall" on the legend. It was under construction when the map was made.
