Joy of Teaching, Joy of Learning

This was a gathering of Adult Religious Education teachers, prospective teachers, Monthly Meeting coordinators and contacts, and anyone else with a concern, interest, or responsibility in A-R-E

Saturday October 29th, 2005, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm

At the Arch Street Meeting House

Sponsored by the A-R-E Working Group

Childcare was provided

9:00 – 10:00 am we checked in, payed our registration ($5.00 which goes toward about half the cost of a catered lunch) and had coffee or tea while getting acquainted.

10:00-10:50 am we heard from Mark Carey and Thom Jeavons from the Making New Friends project on a study of who we are in PhYM, both as individuals and as Meetings. They will help us better understand the experiences and assumptions of those we are teaching. A two page handout summarized the findings, and a Power Point version of this can be seen at (click here ).

11:00-12:00 we heard from a panel of teachers including Chel Avery, Peter Blood-Patterson, and Michael Crauderuff, as they shared with us their experience of the Joy of Teaching.

12:45-1:30 Harry and Lois Forest will told us of their experience with a new British program developed at Woodbrooke called “Hearts and Minds Prepared.” They are authorized to teach the course, and have been teaching, at Medford Meeting. Their handout is reproduced here

1:40-3:30 We ended with general sharing and worship. A vidio by Parker Palmer was mentioned and is available from Gene. I recommend his essay on Meeting for Learning
