China Summer:

International Volunteer Workcamp

July 27-August 21, 2008

Funding Your Trip

The cost of the 2008 trip is $1500 (not including airfare). In addition participants will need to pay for a visa ($100), a passport ($97) if you don't have one, any necessary shots, and spending money for souvenirs.

We realize that all of these expenses can put a financial burden on many participants. The following is a list of resources that may be of help:

1) Your Monthly and/or Quarterly Meetings
If you are a member of the Religious Society of Friends, begin by asking your monthly meeting for financial help. In the past, many meetings have given participants overwhelming support, not only financially, but also in helping them prepare for the trip by suggesting books, movies, and offering personal stories.

2) Pemberton Fund
If you are part of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, you can apply to the Pemberton Fund (for transportation costs only). Please contact Carol Walz at (215)-241-7201 for more information and the application form. Ask for around $500.

3) International Outreach Granting Group
Applicants are encouraged from U.S. friends and others who travel abroad. Ask for around $500.00. Please contact:
Philadelphia Yearly Meeting

4) Friends Institute Granting Group
For members of Friends meetings in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting between the ages of 18 and 40. Ask for around $500.00. Please contact:
Friends Institute Granting Group
Philadelphia Yearly Meeting
1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, Pa 19012

5) College students: look into scholarships for international volunteer work available through your school
Many colleges and universities offer grants or fellowships that can be used to fund summer volunteer work abroad. Check with your study abroad office.

6) Be Creative!
• Ask Relatives
• Organize a yard sale with your meeting/family/friends with proceeds going to help pay for the trip
• One participant organized a pancake breakfast at his meeting for several Sundays to raise money
• Write something about the trip for your local newspaper

If you have any other ideas, e-mail us so that we can pass them on to other participants.
