Wicomico River Friends Meeting began in 1987 as a worship group. For many years after becoming a Monthly Meeting we rented an inexpensive building. But, the practical long term future of that space has always been questionable. In 2004 Ev & Kit Pilgrim donated their 22 acre property and house at 519 Dykes Road, south of Salisbury, Maryland .The community now plans to honor this blessing and build a more permanent home for our Meeting there. We invite you to join us in this journey of faith toward a building a new meetinghouse.
No project plan can fully describe how this place will be used as a base for our devoted worship and ministry; or how it will help us establish loving ties between each other as well as with the broader community. But, these are our aspirations. We feel that building this meetinghouse will help us to answer God's call for us to corporately seek and live in the Light of Truth together.
For over ten years people have been supporting our meetinghouse dream with their gifts. What we build and our future financial obligations will depend on what we raise in donations. Even after the building is complete there will be ongoing financial needs required to support the continuing ministry and witness that will happen there.
Project Description
1. The central focus of our design will be to create a warm practical and simple place for community worship.
2. We will build onto the existing house to keep our costs down and be true to a testimony of simplicity.
3. Our design and construction will be as frugal as possible and created in a way that can accommodate future expansion.
4. We intend to use as many environmentally friendly features and materials as possible in support of our collective witness of care for the environment.
5. Also in Light of this witness, the back half of the property has is being converted from a farm field into a nature preserve. Several thousand trees have been planted there and a trail is being established. This will provide a place for outdoor worship, public outreach, and environmental education.
6. Construction of the meetinghouse will begin as soon as the permitting process is complete, and our funding sources have been secured. Both of these tasks could take time.
