We are a small unprogrammed Quaker Meeting which began as a worship group in Salisbury, Maryland in 1987. Our group has grown to about twelve families, who live in about a sixty mile radius of the meeting. We are now a monthly Meeting in the Southern Quarter of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
We meet on First Days (Sunday's) in a small masonry building on the corner of Carey and Glen avenues in Salisbury, Maryland (thirty minutes from Atlantic Beaches and about an hour from the Chesapeake Bay). The Meeting has found spiritual unity in pursuit of a direct relationship with God, by trying to actively live the teachings of Jesus Christ as it is revealed to us personally and corporately as a Friends Meeting.
Through out our short history, our Meeting has concentrated much of its'energy on establishing a sense of spiritual community among its' members and attenders. But, many Friends at Wicomico River Friends Meeting have also felt called to minister to individuals incarcerated in local jails and correctional institutions. Some friends have done this through worship with inmates, some through prison literacy programs and others are facilitators of the Alternatives to Violence Program. Other members have been active with Habitat for Humanity and committees of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other beneficial organizations.
