speaking at Mickleton MeetingOn February 17, 2008, Mickleton Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) hosted a program, "Islam Explained," presented by Zia Rahman.
More than 45 people both Quakers and members of the general public heard Zia give a PowerPoint presentation about the religion of Islam, as well engaging in questions and answers.
In 1994, Zia co-founded the Islamic Center of South Jersey with its Mosque in Palmyra. After retirement, and particularly after 9-11, he became instrumental in the successful effort to establish a Mosque in Voorhees Township. Mr. Rahman is an active member of the Human Relations Commission of Camden County; the Catholic, Jewish, Muslim Dialogue; The Diocese of Camden's Racial Justice Committee; and Chairman of the Voorhees Township Citizen's Cultural and Diversity Committee. He conducts educational sessions to enhance understanding of Islam. Professionally, Zia worked as an engineer for Rohm and Haas for over 30 years, serving as Director of Information Technology and Corporate IT Strategic Planning.
The presentation emphasized fundamental tenets of peace and submission to God in the Muslim faith, as well as points of commonality with Judaism and Christianity.
