In 1988 Suzanne Day applied for the part-time position with our PYM War Tax Concerns Support Committee (now re-named Conscience, Militarism, and War Tax Concerns Working Group). Fifteen years later, her staff service has ended with her one-day-a-week position for that working group being folded into the full-time work of PYM?s new Peace and Justice Coordinator.
During the Vietnam War, Suzanne volunteered as a draft counselor in Illinois, a skill which she brought to PYM Friends. She counseled potential and current war tax resisters, and supported young Friends facing draft registration. Hers was the overseeing eye as an ad hoc committee prepared the Yearly Meeting?s brief for the U.S. Supreme Court when Priscilla Adams appealed there for accommodation of religious conscientious objectors who refuse tax payment for wars. She is known to many as an organizer of lobbying trips to Washington in support of the Peace Tax Fund bill.
Suzanne's deep knowledge of such matters, and her fidelity in supporting the public witness of many, will continue to be felt among us, as she becomes a member of the working group for which she was, for so long, a staff person. Suzanne is a member of Westfield Meeting (NJ).
