Thirty-three educators, both Friends and others, gathered at Friends Center in August for a two-day training workshop on conflict resolution and community building, sponsored by PYM's Nonviolence and Children Working Group (NVC). The teachers had an opportunity to learn and practice specific techniques and strategies for anticipating, preventing and responding to conflict in school settings. This is the third consecutive year that the workshop has been offered and fully enrolled.
This workshop marks the end of two years of service on staff by Betsy Berger of Central Philadelphia Meeting in the role of Nonviolence and Children Program Coordinator. The part-time position was eliminated to help balance the PYM budget. Betsy will be greatly missed on the PYM staff. She plans to stay involved with NVC as a member of the working group. The mission of NVC is to give practical expression to the Friends peace testimony in the area of education and the care of children.
Happily, staff support for the NVC Working Group will continue uninterrupted, provided by Helen Fields, the new Religious Education Program Coordinator. (See separate article.) As part of her work to nurture Quaker faith, practice and witness in our young people, Helen looks forward to working with Betsy and the other dedicated NVC members to ensure that the high-quality programs and resource materials of NVC continue to be available and widely circulated within our community.
