The growth economy and Friends testimonies will be the subject of personal reflections by two Friends at an open meeting of the PYM Environmental Working Group on Tuesday evening, May 20, at the Fourth and Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia. There will be light supper at 5:30 and opening worship at 6 p.m. before the meeting hears from Mark Myers of London Grove Meeting (PA), retired corporate executive who runs a farm, and Keith Helmuth of Central Philadelphia Meeting, retired farmer who runs a book store. Worship sharing will follow.
This open meeting will inaugurate an ongoing Consultation on Economics and Ecology within the Religious Society of Friends nationwide. To help focus the Consultation process, the Environmental Working Group and Quaker Eco-Witness are convening a Gathering of 25 invited Friends, including Quaker economists and staff from American Friends Service Committee and Friends Committee on National Legislation, at Pendle Hill in June. A report on the May 20 open meeting will be sent as an Epistle to the Pendle Hill Gathering, which in turn will address an Epistle to Meetings throughout the United States and Canada.
There is no cost for the May 20 meeting, and advance registration is not required, but Friends planning to attend are asked to contact EWG facilitator Ed Dreby at 609-261-8190 or drebymans@igc.org so the working group can make arrangements for supper.
