Next January Friends from around the world, including five from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, will gather in Auckland, New Zealand, for the 21st Triennial of Friends World Committee for Consultation. Leading up to that gathering, the FWCC World Office is collecting action minutes from Yearly Meetings for possible consideration at Triennial business sessions. PYM’s representatives to FWCC invite all PYM Working Groups to consider whether any minutes approved since August 2000 should be sent on to the Triennial. If your group would like to forward a minute, contact either Liz Gates at 717-581-3416 or Phil Gilbert at 610-388-6725.
Travel to New Zealand will use much jet fuel; and emissions from that travel will surely degrade the environment. With this concern in mind, Friends gathered at the last Triennial in 2000 asked Friends around the world to plant at least 9,000 trees before January 2004 to at least partially compensate for the burning of the jet fuel. In this small way – planting trees – PYM Friends are invited to participate in the Triennial. Let us know if your Meeting plants trees!
Finally, many Friends are aware of the transformative peace conference that took place at Guilford College last January, sponsored by FWCC and very strongly supported by PYM. Friends who were not able to attend can now order a 5-CD set of the plenary sessions of that conference for $30. Many of the speakers at that conference are willing to travel and speak with individual Meetings. Contact the Section of the Americas office at 215-241-7250 for more information.
