What do Greene Street Friends School faculty, University of Pennsylvania education graduate students, and parents and teachers at The Kimberton Waldorff School all have in common? Over the last several months, members of PYMs Nonviolence and Children Working Group (NVC) have facilitated training for all these groups in community building, conflict resolution, and ways to manage a more peaceful classroom. For the NVC facilitators, it was especially gratifying to see enthusiastic teachers at Greene Street Friends School wanting to build and deepen their already proficient skills.
In addition to working directly with teachers, members of NVC have also facilitated several workshops on "Friendship" and "Being a Friend in the Real World" to intergenerational groups of First-day school children and their parents. According to parents at Swarthmore Meeting (PA), an unanticipated benefit of the workshop was the opportunity to get to interact with more children in the Meeting, as well as for children to make new connections with adults and other-age children who were not be in their own First-day classroom.
As parents, educators and Friends themselves, NVC members are finding that as our country prepares for war, our children need to know that they have friends and allies both at Meeting and in the larger world.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Nonviolence and Children Working Group, or would like NVC to facilitate a workshop for your Meeting, please contact PYM-NVC staff person Betsy Berger at 215-241-7233.
