Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has taken a concrete step in developing our partnership with Ramallah Friends Meeting in the Palestinian West Bank. On October 18 we transferred $45,000 to the architectural and engineering firm that will oversee the repairs to the Friends meetinghouse in Ramallah. They have lined up contractors and believe they can get access to materials immediately to commence the repairs. The first task is to replace a leaking roof to protect the rest of the building from further damage. The contractors believe this task can be completed before the rainy season begins in December.
This is a small step in developing the partnership to which PYM committed at Annual Sessions last March. We hope this step will open the way to more. Friends in Ramallah say the repair of this building can become a visible symbol of hope for the future in a community where hope is hard to see. We continue to welcome contributions for this effort, and are deeply grateful to the Friends and Meetings that have already offered financial and other support. An update will be given at Interim Meeting on November 21.
