Friends, we are in the 12th year of our second-longest war. Its a new kind of war, waged mainly by economic sanctions that were imposed August 6, 1990.
UNICEF and many other reliable sources report that thousands of children die every month in Iraq as a direct result of those sanctions. Bombs, too, have been killing children and other civilians in Iraq. And now a massive new attack is threatened!
The war against Iraq hurts us, too. Millions of American children are hungry, homeless and without health care while we waste tax dollars on warmaking.
Mairead Corrigan Maguire, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has said this: In 50 years, the next generation will ask What were you doing when the children of Iraq were dying?
Friends, what will we answer?
