What do PYM's Young Adult Friends (YAFs) have in common with Ultimate Frisbee, Chinese food, Pendle Hill, weekends at the beach and service projects? The answer: Friends Institute — the PYM working group that builds fellowship and community among PYM members age 18 to roughly 40. And that's not all Friends Institute is doing these days. A recent surge in participation has permitted an expansion of activities to better reach the YAFs. The momentum and good spirit built up in the past year lead us now to a busy fall for YAFs.
The past year started with actively planning and participating in the 2001 Tri-Quarter Conference at Camp Ockanickon. FI sponsored several events during that fall weekend, including an evening square dance, an evening of intergenerational games and a workshop about "raising Quaker children," conducted by Harriet Heath. These sessions were well attended. FI expects this gathering will become a regular activity for YAFs. This year's Tri-Quarter is October 18-20. The "Second Sunday Sojourns" make up the core of FI outreach efforts. On these days, Friends gather at a Meeting within PYM for worship and fellowship with current FI members and new prospective members. A calendar of upcoming Sojourns is available on our web site and in our updated brochure.
We will celebrate the end of summer September 15-16 with a weekend at the New Jersey shore. Other events will include an afternoon of intergenerational games where Friends can also learn to lead them.
