Here's whats new at the PYM Library.
Videos:
COMMON GROUND: THE POWER OF SILENCE. 48 minutes. Points out the assault of noise on our psychic space, and explores various forms of silent worship and healing meditation. Includes scenes from Abington Meeting at a Meeting for Worship, Buddhist and Catholic monasteries.
COMPELLED BY CONSCIENCE: NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR A PEACE TAX FUND. 14 minutes. 2002 edition. Explains the idea of the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Bill in its historical and present context. Includes interviews of Suzanne Day and Hal Taylor in Washington, DC.
THE GOOD WAR: AND THOSE WHO REFUSED TO FIGHT IT. 60 minutes. Independent Television Service, 2002. Includes interviews of Quaker conscientious objectors. 40,000 conscientious objectors refused to fight in World War II. In prison, as medical guinea pigs, firefighters, attendants in mental institutions and in Civilian Public Service work camps, their wartime service prepared a generation of nonviolent activists to change American society. (from cover).
MIRACLE MAKER: THE STORY OF JESUS. 87 minutes. Christmas Films, 2000. This video has been produced using claymation, a cartoon form which uses clay models instead of cartoon sketches. Co-producer Derek Hayes is a Quaker. The video comes highly recommended by Anne Thomas, our Canadian guest at residential Yearly Meeting in July 2001. Anne has prepared a study booklet to go with the video, and has used it successfully with children aged 8-10.
LONG NIGHTS JOURNEY INTO DAY. 95 minutes. California Newsreel, 2000. This video provides a dramatic inside look at one of the most innovative and ambitious attempts at dialogue and healing in human history South Africas Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The film documents South Africas quest for restorative justice. (from cover).
RUFUS JONES: A LUMINOUS LIFE. 40 minutes. Shared Vision, 2001. Fine documentary on the life of Rufus Jones. Includes a companion study guide of 67 pages.
WHISPERS OF ANGELS: A STORY OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. 60 minutes. Produced by Teleduction, 2001. An excellent production telling the history of the Underground Railroad in Delaware. Ed Asner plays the part of Thomas Garrett, and Blair Underwood plays William Still.
