he Public Education Working Group announces the awarding of five grants to teachers in public schools for the 2001-2 school year, totaling over $10,000. Grant recipients include:
- Margo Tassi, member of Central Philadelphia Meeting and art teacher in the School District of Philadelphia, $1200 to create a tile mural with students based upon the work of African-American quilters.
- Susan Beall Miller, member of Unami Meeting (PA), $1500 to support projects with the Peace and Harmony Fair, a Black History exhibit and Understanding Each Other/Healing the Hate.
- Karen Stoehr, member of State College Meeting (PA), $3200 to support creating a mediation center.
- Gayle Winkler and Olivia Kelly, members of Woodstown Meeting (NJ), $1500 to purchase books and other instructional aids in support of additional conflict resolution training for the teachers in their Camden elementary school.
- Patricia Davis, member of Radnor Meeting (PA), $3600 to continue conflict resolution training for students and adults.
The Public Education Working Group grants program supports Friends who teach in public schools who wish to enrich their school's program in areas of interest to Friends.
