ewtown Meeting (PA) is sponsoring a new public radio venture called PEACETALKS: Exploring the Alternatives to Violence. It was founded by Newtown member Barbara Simmons, former executive director of the Bucks County Peace Center, and developed with the oversight and guidance of an advisory council from the Meeting. Its first project will be a four-part series airing late this fall on WHYY 91FM in Philadelphia. Laura Jackson has been brought on board as senior producer.
PEACETALKS will travel the world to bring to public radio the best stories – large and small – of people struggling to move beyond violence. We need to hear more about non-violent ways of resolving bitter conflicts, and we need to shift our thinking, shift our listening, and shift our perspective. PEACETALKS will explore the alternatives to violence and expand the listener's sense of the possibilities for peace and greater justice in the world today – whether in the field of business, education, politics, homemaking, or the arts.
While the majority of production will be local and national in scope, there will be some international content in the first series of programs. Peter Clowney of WHYY 91FM and Barbara Simmons will travel to South Africa in April, and Minnesota public radio's Erin Galbally and Laura Jackson will travel to Vietnam in early fall.
