Friends of Native Americans gather

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

New York land claims and other Native American land claims cases will be the central topic of discussion at the second Northeast Regional Gathering of Friends of Native Americans taking place June 15-17 at Burlington Meeting House and Conference Center in New Jersey. All Friends and attenders concerned with Native American issues are invited to join representatives from the Indian committees of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and New England Yearly Meetings, and staff from American Friends Service Committee and Friends Committee on National Legislation, to explore critical issues affecting Native Americans and the work of Friends to support them.

For over 350 years Friends have worked with Native American peoples to address the fundamental injustices inflicted upon them. Our current goal is to combine our resources and our efforts to become more effective. Since our first gathering in January, we have been busy building a wider network, establishing a website and publishing a newsletter.

Please join us for good discussion, worship, food, fun and fellowship! The weekend will begin with a potluck meal on Friday evening (so please arrive with food to share) followed by introductions. Saturday will feature speakers and presentations by those who are actively engaged in land rights issues, a panel discussion, small group discussions, and social activities. Sunday we will have worship, future planning, wrap-up, and a midday meal.

The cost of $85 includes participation in the conference, lodging Friday and Saturday nights, and meals Saturday and Sunday. The publication “Whose Land?” is required reading as part of your preparation for the conference. If you don't have a copy, add $8 to your payment (total $93) and one will be sent to you.

A deposit of $30 (or $38 if you need a copy of “Whose Land?”) must be received by May 30 to secure your place. Make checks payable to "Deep Roots." To enroll or request an agenda or other information, contact Jean Carey, 663 Cricket Avenue, Ardmore PA 19003; phone 610-649-9931; e-mail jean@careyproject.org
