he Pendle Hill Forum is a program that links the spiritual and social dimensions of faith. It is rooted in the Quaker social testimonies of equality, simplicity, community, integrity, and peace. The Forum seeks to create a context for spiritually-grounded dialogue, reflection and engagement on the pressing social issues of contemporary society. This year, the Forum is undertaking a major clarification and re-dedication of its mission for the next decade. The Forum will tighten and deepen its focus by addressing a small number of related topics in depth over a period of several years. Possible topics include the pervasive culture of materialism and the extreme economic inequality in our society.
As part of its new emphasis, the Pendle Hill Forum will hold a major conference on May 4-6 entitled The Prophetic Voice in Public Life: Reclaiming the Quaker Social Testimony. By linking the Quaker testimonies with the prophetic voice that challenges injustice in society, the conference seeks to bring people together to explore how our deepest religious convictions can be manifested in our daily lives. Featured presenters include Thom Jeavons, general secretary of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting; Jonathan Dale of Britain Yearly Meeting, Jim Wallis of Sojourners Magazine, and the Rev. Elizabeth Ellis of the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry in Boston.
