elissa Whaley of Central Philadelphia Meeting is producing an interdisciplinary dance performance that uses personal experiences as a vehicle to reflect on the shattered lives of the families of prisoners. The performance is supported by a $1,300 grant from the Meeting.
Melissa and her husband, Sam Chamberlain, underwent a clearness process at Central Philadelphia Meeting and received a "minute of religious service" to support their calling to minister to people suffering from drug addiction and the "War on Drugs." The Meeting approved financial support for their ministry.
The premiere of "Outside the Walls" will take place at 8 p.m. March 16 and 17 at the Conwell Theatre of Temple University. The theater is located on the 5th floor of Conwell Hall at Broad and Montgomery streets in Philadelphia. Tickets are $10 general admission and may be purchased with VISA or MasterCard by calling the Temple University box office at 215-204-1122.
A free performance of "Outside the Walls" is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Fourth and Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia.
Melissa's experience as the spouse of a prisoner grounds her work in reality. She is under the weight of a concern to use her work for healing. Many of the performers in this work have been or are currently affected by the incarceration of a loved one.
