n September 22, 2000, The Philadelphia Tribune, a regional newspaper focusing on the African-American community, featured an article on the Fellowship of Friends of African Descent, who held their annual conference in Jamaica last year. Within the article was information on Quakerism. An additional article discussed how Quakers responded (or didnt) to issues of slavery. Featured were pictures of Vanessa Julye and Barry Scott, members of Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, and other Friends of African descent.
Neither of the articles informed interested readers how they might find a Quaker Meeting. The Worship and Ministry Committee of our Meeting decided to run an ad in the newspapers Church Directory section that introduced readers to our Meeting and gave pertinent information.
We invite other Meetings who wish to reach out to the African-American community to advertise their Meetings as well. If there is enough interest, perhaps Meetings could have a combined ad. We also encourage non-African-American members of the Yearly Meeting to read the Tribune to become more informed about the African-American community in the Philadelphia area.
Meetings interested in pursuing this further may call me at 215-233-5225.
