The Friends Historical Association is planning a chartered bus trip May 5-6 to visit historical Quaker meetinghouses in Centre County, Pennsylvania. State College Meeting will serve as hosts.
In the late 1700s there was a migration of Friends to Centre County, where they farmed, built meetinghouses, and then, for whatever reasons, moved on to western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Elwood Way of State College Meeting is writing up this history and will be the tour guide. The Ways were one of those early Quaker families, but one which remained in the area, farming and raising fruit.
A chartered bus will pick up passengers Saturday morning, May 5, at the Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia and at Kendal at Longwood near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Upon arrival in Centre County the group will visit several meetinghouses including Bellefonte, the county seat.
Following the Saturday afternoon tour and a bit of rest at a motel the group will gather at State College Meeting for a covered-dish dinner. After dinner there will be a talk by Don Yoder of Haverford Meeting (PA), professor of folk culture at the University of Pennsylvania. His family roots lie in the early Meetings which the group will have visited.
Sunday morning, May 6, the group will stop at Pennsdale Meeting (PA) for meeting for worship on the way back to Philadelphia.
Anyone interested in participating in the tour should contact Joelle Bertolet at 610-896-1161 or <fha@haverford.edu> Reservation deadline is April 2. Anticipated costs include $40 per person for bus, $45 for single motel room or $55 for double, plus breakfast, lunches and a modest donation for dinner.
