Friends Neighborhood Guild, a settlement house under the care of Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting since 1879, is holding a reunion on Saturday, June 9.
The Guild has a wonderful rich history as a focus of Quakerly caring for our city neighbors (the archives and photos are a treasure). With more community control since the 1960s, however, its profile among Quakers is no longer so high. Some people have heard of the Friends Housing Co-op and Friends Rehabilitation Program; few know that both were offshoots of the Guild, which maintains its original mission of serving the neighborhoods of lower North Philadelphia. The Guild has a board that remains half-Quaker, a vibrant enthusiastic staff, and deep loyalty in the surrounding community.
The reunion is an opportunity to acknowledge our roots, celebrate both our history and our present work, and look toward our future together. We are particularly anxious to make sure that people who were involved in the 1940s, '50s, '60s and '70s know about the event. If you know of somebody who should get a personal invitation, or would like more details, contact Guild Executive Director Felicia Coward at 215-923-1544, or Board President Pamela Haines at 215-349-9428 or <PHainesOCO@aol.com>. Please save the date of June 9; all our lives are richer for being involved.
