STEWARDSHIP

Seminars aid Friends in estate planning

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

Seventy-five percent of Americans do not have a will. The Development Services Working Group plans to change that statistic among Friends. To begin the process, a Wills and Estate Planning Seminar was conducted for the members of Abington Quarterly Meeting on October 8. Forty-six Friends attended, and in their collective opinion they benefited greatly from the presentation and wished to have another more extended presentation on estate planning.

Friends in Abington Quarter felt so well served by this gathering that another such presentation has been scheduled for the members of Western Quarterly Meeting. The Wills and Estate Planning Seminar for Western Quarter will take place at Kennett Meeting from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14 (snow date January 21). Two experienced lawyers, Neil Head of London Grove Meeting and Peter Temple of Uwchlan Meeting, will lead Friends through a discussion on wills and estate planning.

It is of the greatest importance that Friends understand how planning their estates can provide protection for children, grandchildren, and elderly loved ones. Planning also preserves our estates for our families and those institutions that we value. Tax laws are continually changing. Friends need to be aware of how these changes impact existing wills and estate plans. Neil and Peter will address these issues and answer your questions.

It is the goal of the Development Services Working Group to assist the members of PYM to either draw up a will or update an existing will. Wills are as important to young adults as they are to the older generation. Without a will, who will decide who will care for your children? Who will decide the disposition of your estate? The answer to these questions is “the state in which you reside will make these decisions if you don't have a will.”

Come hear Neil and Peter at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14, at Kennett Meeting, Route 82 at Sickles Street, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, a half mile south of the Route 1 bypass. Please RSVP before January 10 by calling 215-241-7115 or e-mailing elizabeth@pym.org.
