Quaker young women win national pageant, Olympic medal

RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

PYM News does not ordinarily report on the individual accomplishments of Friends, but two young women in the Friends community gained national attention recently and we couldn't resist telling you about it.

First, Jillian Parry, 18, of Middletown Meeting (Bucks Quarter, PA) was crowned Miss Teen USA® 2000 at a nationally televised pageant on August 26.

Then, Emily deRiel, 26, of Haverford Meeting (PA) won the silver medal in the first women's modern pentathlon at the Summer Olympic Games on October 1 in Sydney, Australia.

In case you're wondering, the women's modern pentathlon combines pistol shooting, fencing, running, swimming, and equestrian show jumping.

See our interview with Jillian Parry.
