t Yearly Meeting last March there was an open meeting for Monthly Meeting clerks — and others interested in the work of clerks — to share the problems, concerns and joys of that work. We had many more people than expected and too little time, but it was an exciting gathering and there was interest in repeating it at a more convenient and longer time. Now that time has come.
The Support and Outreach Standing Committee of PYM plans a similar gathering Saturday morning, December 2, 2000, at the Fourth and Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia. Registration will be at 9:00 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts. We will meet from 9:30 until 12:30 p.m. with breaks. Lunch will be provided to give all a chance to meet and discuss the topics of the day.
The gathering will focus on topics that matter most to Monthly Meeting clerks, past, present and future, as they are raised at the meeting December 2. Some examples from the March gathering were:
- Splits in the Meeting, especially over property, finances, and development;
- Trouble getting the Meeting for Business started and involving the whole Meeting in the business aspects of the Monthly Meeting;
- Help with troubled or troublesome individuals;
- Help with the “nuts and bolts” of clerking;
- Different structures and formats for Meetings of different sizes.
We will use the topics that arise as the basis for forming smaller groups for in-depth discussions of major areas of concern. We may have very brief presentations from one or two of the appropriate resource people — mostly to let you know who they are, how they can be reached and what they offer.
