he Republican National Convention in Philadelphia the week of July 31 presents opportunities for Friends to reach out to the 45,000 visitors who will come to town for the occasion. All Quaker entities can play a role in welcoming and educating both politicians and news media, as well as bearing witness to Friends beliefs and practices.
Peggy Morscheck, director of the Quaker Information Center, has called a meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, for anyone interested in sharing plans and brainstorming strategies. The meeting will be at Friends Center, 15th and Cherry streets, Philadelphia. To register, call Peggy at 215-241-7024 or e-mail quakerinfo@afsc.org
Among the ideas shared by Peggy:
- inviting conventioneers to Friends meetings for worship
- offering programs on the Quaker history of the Philadelphia area
- communicating about current political issues in light of Friends testimonies
- helping to keep street demonstrations peaceful
Please inform Peggy Morscheck of any plans made by Friends in connection with the convention, so that the Quaker Information Center can provide information and referral to inquirers.
Looking ahead to the Republican convention, PYM Interim Meeting on April 27 authorized its clerk and alternate clerk "to appoint a small group to gather under the cover of the Spirit to prepare a message which might be useful toward advancing the cause of peace in the world, and which would speak to the condition of delegates and the public at this time." The group was authorized "to seek for guidance for a suitable and effective way to promulgate this message through whatever non-violent and suitable means may be given them to use."
